1785. Copper-line engraving. 175mm by 120mm (sheet). William Cullen (1710 - 1790) was a Scottish physician and professor of medicine, best known for his innovative teaching methods. Faint overall toning. Remains of hinges on the reverse.

1855. Steel-engraving. 125mm by 195mm (image only). Sergeant was an English painter who came to Australia, c1854. The Mitchell Library holds several of his pen-and-ink views of Melbourne and Sydney done in the 1850s, some of which were engraved by Greatbach in Scotland.

1804. Copper-line engraving. 120mm by 80mm (platemark). 'The Celebrated Promoter of the Arts Alderman Boydell'. From 'The Wonderful Museum'. Small mark at top, some marks and soiling outside the platemark. With descriptive text. John Boydell (1720-1804) was an 18th-century British publisher noted for his reproductions of engravings. Boydell was alderman of Cheap ward in 1782, master of the Stationers' Company in 1783, sheriff of London in 1785, and Lord Mayor of London in 1790.

1784. Etching. 175mm by 110mm (platemark). Depicts a middle aged Townshend in 1784, a year after receiving his title. He is standing side on, with one hand resting on his sword and the other holding out his hat, depicting him in the middle of a speech in the Commons. Initialed 'JS' in the plate lower left corner. Published by James Bretherton. Portrait of Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney PC (1733 - 1800). Townsend was a British politician who, as Home Secretary during the Pitt Government, was responsible for planning the convict settlement of Botany Bay, and appointed Arthur Phillip as Governor. When Phillip reached Botany Bay he found it unsuitable for settlement and rowed to Port Jackson where he found a cove with better water supply and access for larger ships. In honour of Townsend, Phillip named the area Sydney Cove on 22nd January 1788, and the settlement became known as Sydney Town. Wove paper. Remains of acid free hinges on the reverse. Small faint mark on left hand side.

1800. Copper-line engraving. 240mm by 170mm (platemark). A set of four engravings depicting the making of optical lenses and tools used. From a smaller size edition of Diderot and d'Alembert's Encyclopedie (1751-80). Faint waterstain to the left hand margin.  

1820. Lithograph with original hand-colouring. 520mm by 640mm (frame). From 'Plates illustrative of the researches and operations of G. Belzoni in Egypt and Nubia', published in London in 1820. Giovanni-Battista Belzoni was an Italian explorer and archaeologist.

1760. Copper-line engraving. 75mm by 135mm (platewmark) 250mm by 190mm (sheet). Copper-line engraving, published in Prevost's Histoire General des Voyages, circa 1760. Van Der Lijn was a member of the Council of Batavia who had sponsored the expeditions of Dutch navigator Abel Tasman. Van Der Lijn (1608-1679) was governor-general of Dutch East Indies from 1646 until 1650. During the years of Van Der Lijn's governorship, corruption within the company increased. The administrators in the Netherlands dismissed him on 7th October 1650, Carel Reyniersz was appointed as its successor. It was customary for a man of his standing to make his homecoming as a commander of the fleet. They became the pre-eminent illustrators of flora and fauna in late 19th century Australia.A couple of short tears on the right hand edge, outside the image area.

Derived from the frontispiece to 'An account of the English colony in New South Wales: with remarks on the dispositions, customs, manners, &c, of the native inhabitants of that country' by David Collins (1756-1810), published in London, 1798-1802. One foxing spot in image, off-setting to reverse of sheet.

1870. Wood-engraving. 170mm by 260mm (sheet). From 'Voyage autour du monde' by Comte de Beauvoir. Count Ludovic de Beauvoir (1846-1929) was a French traveler of the nineteenth century. When he was only 19, he embarked with his childhood friend the Duke of Penthievre for a trip around the world, from 1865 to 1867.Some light waviness to the sheet and foxing in the margins.

1795. Stipple engraving. 155mm by 110mm (platemark). Richard Polwhele (1760 - 1838) was a Cornish clergyman, poet and historian of Cornwall and Devon. He corresponded with Samuel Badcock, Macaulay, William Cowper, Erasmus Darwin, and Anna Seward. Tear at bottom of the sheet, outside the platemark.

1819. Copper-line engraving. 170mm by 105mm. 'JOHN HARRISON CURTIS Efq.r F.M.S. Aurist to His Royal Highness The Prince Regent And Lecturer on the Anatomy, Physiology and Diseases of the Ear.' John Harrison Curtis (1778-ca. 1860) was an English otologist, inventor, writer and lecturer who served as aurist to the Prince Regent. He invented several new instruments for operations on the ear, and wrote A Treatise on the Physiology and Diseases of the Ear (1818).False-mounted.

1935. Etching. 165mm by 200mm (platemark). Etching signed in pencil by the artist and editioned 19/30. On Whatman paper watermarked 1934. Vincent Sheldon was a Queensland etcher.CONDITION: Good, slight cockling to the image (exaggerated in the photo).

1671. Copper-line engraving. 140mm by 90mm (platemark). William Salmon (1644-1713), also known as the "professor of five wives", was a maker of drugs. Salmon set up looking for patients near the Smithfield gate of St. Bartholomew's Hospital. He treated all diseases, sold special prescriptions of his own, as well as drugs in general, cast horoscopes, and professed alchemy. Weak impression. A couple of small marks.

Race de Kerry (The Kerry Breed) From the French edition of the pioneering work 'The Breeds of the Domestic Animals of the British Islands' by David Low. Published in Paris.William Sheils was commissioned by David Low, the second Professor of Agriculture at the University of Edinburgh, to create an accurate pictorial record of domestic breeds of animals. From 1829 onwards, in what became a lifetime's work, William Sheils painted 100 of these portraits, depicting many breeds of animals which are now obsolete.
