Tokyo: Nakanishi-ya, 1910. Octavo. Folding color woodcut (ukiyoe) frontispiece, xxxviii, 269, [1] pp. Textual illustrations throughout. Complete as issued. Publisher's decorative boards with gilt cover lettering. Some rubbing but a very good copy of this fragile publication. In the same year, and issued by the same publisher, there were published another two editions of this title, both with more colored plates. This issue appears to be the scarcest. Chushingura is the title given to fictionalized accounts in Japanese literature, theater, and film that relate to the historical incident involving the Forty-seven Ronin and their mission to avenge the death of their master, Asano Naganori. Including the early Kanadehon Chushingura, the story has been told in kabuki, bunraku, stage plays, films, novels, television shows and other media. With ten different television productions in the years 1997–2007 alone, Ch shingura ranks among the most familiar of all historical stories in Japan.

That they married seems a given. In late 2020, the Japanese supreme court ruled that tattooing could become legal. Until that point, the practice of tattooing—which had a somewhat scandalous image due to its historic association with the organized crime group called the yakuza—was considered a medical procedure, due to the use… Read More

Boston: A. A. Rothenberg & Co., 1895. First edition. Oblong folio (14 x 11 inches). 499, [9, index] pp. Photographic illustrations and portraits on every page. Publisher's padded pebble-grain brown morocco, gilt spine and cover lettering, fine gilt representation of a mounted Knight on front, floral endpapers, all edges gilt. Original plain two-part box (some repair). A fine copy of this lavish publication. Laid in the the August 27th special issue of the Boston Herald devoted to the Encampment (illustration on page one is in color). This was a massive meeting of 40,000 Knights Templar and it almost took over the city of Boston for a short period. In the New York Times of August 27th, we read - "Boston has seldom, if ever, been so elaborately decorated. Practically every building along the line of the march, besides many of the side streets, is clothed in color, with appropriate mottoes and Masonic emblems, intertwined with streamers and bunting." California participants arrived there in a special train.

San Antonio: Paul Ebers, (1909). First edition. Oblong octavo. 80 pp. Predominantly full page photographic illustrations (most full page). Publisher's printed pictorial wrappers in red green and blue. Lower corner of title page excised but not even extending into the border. A very good copy. Quite unusual on the market although OCLC records 12 copies. While the numerous views of early San Antonio are excellent, the real interest in this item lies in the Fort Sam Houston section (the second half of this book). In it are views of soldiers manning machine guns and a machine gun mule, soldiers at parade, four wonderful views of cavalry charges, heavy munitions, signal corps, etc. "1890 the post at San Antonio was designated Fort Sam Houston in honor of Gen. Sam Houston. In 1886 Apache Chief Geronimo was held in the quadrangle before his exile to Florida. During the Spanish-American War, the First United States Volunteer Cavalry, commanded by Col. Queretaro: Imprenta de J.M. Lara, 1848. First edition. Octavo. [4], 44 pp. Modern blue wrapper with printed paper cover label. A very cleand and attractive copy. Dated in type December 11, 1845. "An important circular letter that was sent to the departments to gauge their feelings about war or peace. At the time, the question of Texas was being heavily discussed and John Slidell was waiting at the door to negotiate. Not one to necessarily shrink from war, the author is the consummate realist. He proposes many reasons to avoid a war with the United States, but chief among them is that Mexico is in no condition to sustain a war with all its horrible consequences: “Y ¿cuántos y cuales serian los sacrificios que tendria que hacer la república mexicana, para emprender y sostener decentemente una guerra formal con la de los Estados-Unidos del Norte? Innumerables ciertamente, y todos ruinosísimos e insorpotables bajo los aspectos, con el estado deplorable en que nos hallamos” (p. 21). At bottom, he… Read More

Denver: The Liberal Church, INC., 1934. Typed letter from the Bishop of the Liberal Church Inc. Diocese of San Francisco conferring a Doctorate of Divinity title to Dr. THomas J. Hampton of Bush Street in San Francisco. It is typed on the outlandish letterhead of the church and bears an embossed seal of same. Excellent condition. The Liberal Church was an independent church founded in Denver, Colorado on 23 February 1923 by Frank Hamilton Rice. He was born in 1881 in Danville, Illinois and originally was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1915 he and his family moved to Denver from Oklahoma where he was employed by the Colorado Manufacturer and Consumer as its editor. He served the Grant Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church as a Sunday School teacher and lay minister. In 1922 he advocated that the church sponsor weekly dances for young people as a means of combatting the influence of the public dance halls. After a vigorous debate his idea was soundly defeated and he left the MEC. He was… Read More

[New York]: [Geo. W. Wilson, printer]., 18888. First edition. Octavo. 551. [1] pp. Publisher's printed blue wrappers. Slight sunning along top edge but a beautiful copy. American Section refers to the organization of American Theosophists created on October 30, 1886, at a convention held in Cincinnati, where William Quan Judge was elected as General Secretary and Treasurer. Dr. J. D. Buck and the newly formed Cincinnati Theosophical Society hosted the convention. It was the first national section of the Theosophical Society. There were nine Theosophical lodges in various cities throughout the United States: seven in the East and mid-Western states, and two on the West coast. Mr. Judge established The Path as the official organ of the section, based on subscriptions to support its publication. The Cincinnati Theosophical Society mentioned this in its minutes for January 22, 1888: The First National Convention of the American 9as opposed to international) Section was held in Chicago on April 22,… Read More
