First Edition, first issue. Tarkington's second book is a novel about a mysterious French gambler in 18th century Bath, England. He has inscribed it on verso of the frontispiece: "Inscribed for Mr H. Kauti, Booth Tarkington, Sept. 22, 1941." "Kauti" was, in fact, New York bookseller G. A. Van Nosdall, a famous faker in the book world who send books to authors for inscription under his fake name, and then sell them as association copies. Probably inscribed at Kennebunkport, Maine.
