TANGYE, JEAN. 1st Edition, 1st Impression. 14.1 x 22.2cm claret boards with gilt stamped titles to the spine, 189 (1) pp, with original unclipped dust jacket priced at �1.75. With a gift inscription from the author and also signed by the illustrator on the front free endpaper. A very good plus book with a little pushing to the spine tips. Internally, there is a hint of spotting to the edge of the text block and a hint of toning to the endpapers. The dust jacket, which is now protected in a removable clear jacket (not shown in our images), is a little toned to the rear and has dust staining to the edges of the rear flap. The bottom edge has a little shelf wear and the laminate has rolled away slightly at the bottom corner of the rear panel. There is a 1.5 cm closed tear on the top corner of the rear panel. Rocket Press, 1988. Limited Edition. F. Limited edition No. 214/250. 10.5 x 10 cm in a glazed frame measuring 27.6 x 21.5 cm. The print is numbered and has an embossed stamp of authentication. A lovely example of one of Tenniel's most memorable illustrations from Lewis Carroll's classic work. Provenance: Goldmark Gallery Uppingham. The Dalziel brothers were commissioned to engrave the boxwood blocks on which Tenniel had made his drawings for Alice in Wonderland. The engravers advised Lewis Carroll that the engraved blocks should not be used for printing the illustrations in the books but instead they would act as the masters from which electrotype copies would be made. It was from these electrotypes that all the illustration in the Alice books were printed with a resultant loss in definition. Volume II is the Fourth Edition published in 1888 at Catherine Street, The Strand. 12.3 x 19cm brown decorative paper covered boards, all rebacked with original spines laid down. Yellow coated endpapers; Volume I vii[i] 429[1]pp, Volume II 360pp; Volume III 387[1] The delicate bindings are in a much better state than is usually found with most of the spines having been preserved. There is some rubbing to the edges and the War and Peace title on the spines is very faded but the titles of each individual volume on the front covers is clear and bright. The binding is firm. A miniature version of the original large format, leather bound, limited edition of Gawain produced by the same press in 1997 and which won the Society of Bookbinders competition for the complete book in that year. This much smaller concertina book measures 13.5 x 17.5 cm, having green paper covered boards with a wood cut image to the front and 40 concertina sections containing 20 woodcut images on hand made Nepalese lokta paper with accompanying computer generated text. Signed by the artist on the final leaf. The book is housed in a dark green cloth solander box with a gold embossed image to the front and lined with green and gold marbled paper.
