Description:
Associated Press photograph (235 x 185 mm) with typed caption, dated verso June 10 1969. During SEATO excercises in the South China Sea on June 3 1969, the Australian aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne collided with the USN destroyer Frank E. Evans, resulting in the tragic loss of 74 of the Evans' crew. In spite of the fact that this accident took place during the Vietnam War, and that the Evans had been on service in Vietnam immediately prior to the exercises and was due to return there on their completion, those sailors who died were controversially not included on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., which honours U.S. servicemen who died in the conflict.

Description:
Circa 1875. Four woodburytype photographs, each carte de visite format (90 x 55 mm), mounted on a nineteenth century album page (315 x 235 mm), all strong prints with rich tonal range, the portrait of Ellen Terry (top left) with a small surface abrasion, the portrait of Minnie Walton (top right) with a hairline scratch to the right of her hat. Four portraits of mid-Victorian actresses from a contemporary English theatre memorabilia collector's album. Clockwise from top left are the great Shakespearean actress Ellen Terry; the Australian actress and singer Minnie Walton (wife of impresario Frederick Lyster); Constance Loseby, and Kate Bishop. The reverse images of three of these portraits (Walton, Loseby and Bishop) are held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London (NPG x135885), on a sheet published by the Figaro Office, St. Bride Street, London, dated to early 1875. Minnie Walton died at an early age in San Francisco. The following is an extract from an obituary which appeared in… Read More

Description:
Albumen print from a wet-plate collodion negative, 240 x 300 mm, laid down on its original card mount (removed from a frame at some point), with a contemporary inscription in pencil across the bottom edge of the mount: 'Rose Bank. Residence of Thos. Napier Esq. 1866'; the print has some fading at the edges, but is otherwise in excellent condition; the verso of the mount still has strips of paper waste around the edges taken from the Melbourne Argus newspaper, 8 September  1866 (giving a terminus ante quem - latest possible date - for when the image was taken). An uncommonly large format print for the mid 1860s, this wonderful view of Thomas Napier's grand residence ""Rosebank"", taken by an unidentified photographer, must surely be one of the earliest surviving photographic views taken in the Essendon district. It is also quite possibly a unique image - we have not been able to trace another example. The house's top-hatted owner can be seen in the front garden immediately below the fluttering flag,… Read More

[Title from printed caption beneath image]. Albumen print photograph, 90 x 60 mm, mounted on the recto of a leaf removed (by a previous owner!) from one of only 100 copies of W. B. Withers' History of Ballarat which were extra-illustrated with mounted photographs; dimensions of leaf 212 x 132 mm; in fine condition. A rare portrait photograph of Irish-Australian rebel and politician Peter Fintan Lalor (1827-1889). Lalor is regarded as the principal leader of the diggers in the Eureka Rebellion of December 1854, and his name is inextricably linked with the birth of democracy in Australia. Lalor later had a lengthy career in politics, and at the time this portrait was taken around 1870 by an uncredited photographer, he was serving as Member of the Victoria Legislative Assembly for South Grant. It is thought that only 100 copies of the first edition of Withers' History of Ballarat, published in Ballarat in 1870, were extra-illustrated (Julien Renard commenting on the Bruce Evans copy, Leonard Joel,… Read More

Albumen print photograph, carte de visite format (100 x 62 mm), no photographer's imprint. Top right corner missing, surface soiling, but the image - in particular the facial features of the sitters - has retained its clarity and detail. The woman is dressed in the attire typically worn by members of the Tahitian female aristocracy - she is quite possibly of royal descent. It was certainly not uncommon in the nineteenth century for a European man to marry a Tahitian woman of high standing, the most famous examples being the successful merchants John Brander and Alexander Salmon, whose clan became a powerful trading dynasty in the eastern Pacific through a combination of business acumen and intermarriage with the Tahitian nobility.

Circa 1880. Albumen print photograph (pale, some foxing), carte de visite format (93 x 63 mm), no photographer's studio imprint, captioned in negative: General Tom Thumb and Wife. 'General Tom Thumb' - the stage name of Charles Sherwood Stratton (1838-1883) - was perhaps the most famous of all circus and sideshow performers of the nineteenth century. He was an American dwarf who travelled the world with the promoter P.T. Barnum. In this photograph he is shown with his wife, Lavinia Warren.

Description:
Black card on white paper, 110 x 80 mm (image), 275 x 190 mm (sheet); captioned and dated in brown ink by the artist at lower left: 'W. A. Oldfield / 22nd February 1934'; very well preserved. William Albert Stanley ""Bert"" Oldfield MBE (1894-1976) played representative cricket for New South Wales and Australia as a wicket-keeper. His Test career spanned almost 17 years between December 1920 and March 1937. Oldfield's extraordinary feat of 52 stumpings in just 54 Tests is a record that still stands. He also took 78 Test catches and was a handy lower-order batsman, scoring 1,427 runs at an average of 22.65. In later life, Oldfield was a successful cricket coach and for many years ran his extremely popular Bert Oldfield's Sports Store in Sydney's Pitt Street. If done from life, this fine silhouette of the legendary cricketer must have been made in Sydney, where in February 1934 the Australian cricketers were attending a round of farewell functions prior to embarking on the Ashes tour of… Read More

[France, c 1890]. Oblong box of very thick board (345 x 258 x 45 mm), the lid with a superb, colourful paste-down illustration depicting children and families at the zoo, with camel and elephant rides and an ostrich-drawn carriage. The box contains four chromolithographic scenes pasted onto wood and cut into jigsaw puzzles; each puzzle is complete (sixteen large pieces). The scenes are: an outdoor Punch and Judy show (probably in the Tuileries gardens); a picnic for children in the countryside; a village festival with children playing musical instruments in a procession; a fair with merry-go-round and other attractions. A true marvel both for its perfect condition and exquisite design.
