Description:
University of Queensland Press, 2012 First Edition. Hardcover in Dustjacket. Fine / Fine. "Born in Ireland in 1834, Patrick Ambrose Treacy spent his formative years in Thurles, Tipperary, at the Christian Brothers' school, later entering the Brothers' novitiate in Waterford. In August 1868 he departed Dublin, arriving in Melbourne, Australia, in November. Ambrose arrived when free, secular and compulsory education was being introduced. He accepted the challenge of providing a quality Catholic education and would continue to address it for the next 30 years. This involved providing teachers, raising finance and erecting buildings without government assistance. This book covers his strategies for implementing his courageous ideas, including his fundraising journeys to goldfields in remote areas that are the stuff of legend, and details his relationships within the hierarchy of the church and the wider community. In 1900, Ambrose returned to Dublin as assistant to the superior general of the institute.… Read More

Description:
Published privately by Old Comrades of the 11th Hussars,, 1997. Hardcover in Dustjacket. Fine. The 11th Hussars (Prince Albert's Own) was a cavalry regiment of the British Army established in 1715. It saw service for three centuries including the First World War and Second World War but then amalgamated with the 10th Royal Hussars (Prince of Wales' Own) to form the Royal Hussars in 1969.With the exception of a short spell in Egypt in 1801, the regiment did not see active service again until it was sent to Portugal in April 1811, where it joined the Peninsular War campaign. In August, one of its squadrons was forced to take cover in an orchard at San Martín de Trevejo in Spain, an incident that may have been the derivation of its nickname, the Cherry Pickers.[9] It fought at Badajoz in April 1812 and the Battle of Salamanca in July 1812 before returning to Britain. During the campaign of 1815, it was part of Vandeleur's 4th Cavalry Brigade, fighting at Quatre Bras and Waterloo. In 1840, it was… Read More

Ticonderoga Publications, Nedlands, Western Austra, 1997. Softcover. FINE. Western Australian author. First Edition. Signed with inscription by designer (Russell B. Farr). Unforgettable and disturbing stories here. Be warned. They'll make you think.Ghost Seas is a short story collection of literary science fiction, fantasy, horror, alternate history (and even a Western) by Steven Utley. If you like reading you're going to love this collection. There are two First Contact science fiction stories the likes of which you've never read: Upstart, funny as all get out (depending on your interpretation, I suppose) and Race Relations, a very odd and affecting story, just the way I like them. Then there's the title story Ghost Seas where a newly married couple learns something unexpected about each other with tragic consequences. In Haiti, Utley give us the horribly topical tale where the future United States of America's recent triumph in putting the first man on Mars is juxtaposed against the never-ending… Read More
