Original blue cloth publisher's covers with a beautiful decorated cover of interwoven pine cones in gilt and blue by Margaret Armstrong. There is a previous owner name on the front paste-down dated 1913. Detroit: Fire Department of City of Detroit. Good. 1856. Hardcover. James Adam Van Dyke (1813-1855) came to Detroit in 1834, was an attorney, a working fireman, and elected the 21st Mayor of Detroit in 1847. This volume of memorial addresses--including one to the firemen of Detroit by James Van Dyke relating the history of the fire department--was published by the Fire Department for Private Circulation, probably in a small edition. Van Dyke was also the prosecuting attorney in the railroad conspiracy case involving citizens in Jackson Co. , Michigan who took on the the Michigan Central Rail Road in 1851. Signed by William Van Dyke on front end paper (not certain what the family relation is to the subject of the book). There are historical essays, some in English, and some in Dutch, as well as pioneer lists, etc. Uncommon item relating to Van Raalt's colony in Holland, Michigan. Extremities of paper spine torn about one inch at spine, contents clean and unmarked. This is a desirable copy of an uncommon work relating to the early Dutch in Michigan. No Place: No Publisher. Near Fine. 1975. Softcover. The steam Mataafa was originally a bulk carrier on the Great Lakes and then used as a car carrier. She sank in 1905 outside the Duluth harbor with a loss of nine lives. This account is from the "Duluth Evening Herald" from 1905 and includes several photos of the steamer for this booklet. Original publisher's orange, stapled, printed covers with black cover lettering and decoration. There is a small old bookshop price sticker inside the front wrapper, else this is a nice clean, tight and unmarked book with no interior or exterior markings, no previous owner names and no bookplates.
