Page edges dyed red. 27.5 × 39cm. A wonderful album of 21 albumen prints of Milan, Verona and Venice, each full page and pasted in recto only (the verso being blank throughout the book), and a further 21 smaller images over five pages. It is undated but records suggest the dates of the images are between 1880 and 1900. Of the albumen prints, three are by Edizioni Brogi, four by V Florianello of Verona, and 14 by Fratelli Alinari (three brothers, Leopodo, Guiseppe, and Romualdo). There is no indication of the photographer of the smaller images but as they are bound in after each of the named photographers sections, perhaps they are also by them. Large paperback. 29 × 23cm, 48pp. A fascinating record of the Blitz in Coventry during the Second World War, and the indomitable spirit of its citizens. The first few pages are a history of Coventry and its notable buildings, and then comes November 14th, 1940, and the devastating raid by the Luftwaffe which destroyed vast swathes of the city, including the cathedral. There are narratives from the Fire Service, the utilities, and a good selection of photographs of the bomb damage before moving on to the plan for Coventry. Other writings include Civil Defence, WVS, and a record of antiquarian discoveries during the digging of bomb shelters.
