Description:
[Hawick]: Reprinted from The Hawick Express, 1898. PRESENTATION COPY, 8vo, pp. iv, 45, [1] + frontispiece and 1 plate. Near-contemporary half red calf, marbled boards, spine divided by raised bands, green morocco label, other compartments tooled in gilt, marbled edges, top edge gilt. Padded out with 25 leaves of binders blanks to rear. Just a touch of soiling. A little rubbed, a few marks. With printed compliments slip and 4 page autograph letter from author bound in at front. The letter, addressed to a Mr Harper, mentions Harper’s ‘complimentary request for a copy of my pamphlet for your department of the E. P. COPAC and Worldcat record only a single copy, in the NLS. bc

Description:
Parma: Co'tipi Bodoniani, 1801. 12mo, pp. [ii], viii, [ii], 86. Half-title bound after prefatory verses. Contemporary tree sheep, boards bordered with a gilt rope roll inside a single rule, flat spine divided by gilt rules, pink leather label, other compartments alternating styles of sunburst tools gilt, blue endpapers sprinkled in black, edges yellow sprinkled in red. A touch of minor spotting. Extremities a little rubbed. A pretty copy of the Eclogues of Virgil translated into Italian by Prospero Manara (1714-1800), first published 1764 to general acclaim; it was further reprinted until the 1830s. This particular edition is produced with the typical care and elegance of the Bodoni press, which also published Manara's translation of the Georgics in the same year. Brooks 808.

Description:
Glasguae [Glasgow]: In aedibus academicis, excudebat Andreas Foulis, 1778. 2 vols. bound as 1, folio, pp. [viii], 277, [1], [iv], 307, [3]. Final blank leaf discarded. Later pebbled red morocco, boards with elaborate gilt borders of rules and quatrefoil tools, spine lettered in gilt, edges gilt. Occasional toning and some spotting. Front joint just starting to crack at foot with a little near-invisible refurbishment to head, small darkened area to head of spine. A beautiful and finely bound copy of the Foulis folio Virgil, a fitting companion to the magisterial Homer of twenty years earlier. Among the subscribers to the edition was Adam Smith. The binding on this copy is unsigned but of the highest quality, probably dating to the turn of the 20th century. Gaskell 639; ESTC N22205.

Londini [London]: Impensis F. & C. Rivington, G. Wilkie, & T. N. Longman, 1798. 12mo, pp. 27, [i], 349, [1]. Two leaves with portions torn away causing partial loss of 10 or 12 lines of text on each affected page. Contemporary calf, boards bordered with a gilt roll, flat spine divided by gilt rules between gilt rolls, black morocco label (reading ‘Virgilius / Maittaire’), other compartments with small gilt flower tool. Some spotting and staining, several marginal tears and paper flaws. Rubbed and scuffed, extremities worn. Ownership inscription of Thos. Briggs to flyleaf, along with gift inscription to S. Canning, March 28 1802, two leaves with substantial marginal notes in English elucidating allusions. An extremely rare printing of Virgil, the text mainly reproducing that of Michael Maittaire (1715, reprinted 1777). This printing is unrecorded in ESTC or Library Hub, and Worldcat contains one entry for it, the location given as the ‘South Australian… Read More

Description:
Argentorati [Strasbourg]: Typis Philippi Jacobi Dannbach, 1789. 4to, pp. [iv], 430, [2]. Contemporary sheep, spine dyed black and tooled in gilt to ends. Some scattered toning and foxing. Somewhat scratched and rubbed, corners sometime repaired, spine ends worn, free endpapers excised. Ownership inscriptions to flyleaf: ‘E Libris Caroli Friderici Molbech’ and ‘Jonannes Sofit [?] Februar 1940’, one marginal Latin note in pencil. A scarce edition of Virgil, printed in close imitation of Baskerville’s famous 1757 edition: on laid paper, with a type that closely resembles Baskerville’s, and laid out in a similarly spare style (though plainer still, without decorative touches such as line numbers, italics, and drop capitals). The printer provides a preface in which he praises the famous beauty of Baskerville’s edition, but criticises its text and choice of emendations and readings. His response is to print this edition, combining as it… Read More

Description:
Londini [London]: [Riccardi Press for the Medici Society], 1912. 8vo, pp. [vi], 415, [1]. Printed prize leaf bound in before half-title. Untrimmed and mostly unopened in contemporary green vellum boards, front board blocked in gilt with the arms of Eton College, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. Somewhat discoloured overall, spine sunned and spotted. The prize leaf filled in awarding the book to E.R. Willoughby Radcliffe and signed by headmaster Cyril Alington, dated 1917. The unlimited one-volume issue - printed in black throughout, unlike the 2-volume issue limited to 525 copies (mostly in quarter buckram) which, like the other Bibliotheca Riccardiana editions, had initial capitals in blue. Meant to be used, this version is less commonly seen than the limited, and a number were given as Eton prize like this, almost always in special bindings though this green vellum is particularly unusual.

Description:
Oxonii [Oxford]: Johannes Henricus et Jacobus Parker, 1859. 16mo, pp. [iv], 414, [2]. Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, spine decorated with gilt rolls to head and foot, green morocco label. Some toning and spotting. Binding rubbed. A handful of ink and pencil notes. An early example of the Oxford Pocket Classics series published by archaeologist and publisher John Henry Parker (1806-1884) and his son Jacob Parker (1832-1912). The editor’s note is dated 1848 but the earliest edition we have traced was published in 1852; it was frequently reprinted thereafter though each issue is scarce: Worldcat and Library Hub between them locate this one only in the National Library of China and the Welsh National Trust house Lanhydrock.

Description:
Hagae-Comitis [The Hague]: Ex Typographia Adriani Vlacq, 1663. FIRST EDITION, 4to, pp. [xii], 123, [1]. Contemporary vellum, boards bordered in gilt with a central gilt tool. Lightly toned and soiled. Rebacked to style, hinges neatly relined, boards soiled and marked, ties lost. Ownership inscription of Henry Williamson to flyleaf (crossed out), price of 10s 6d to endpapers, and further ownership inscription of Gasparis Delahoyde, surgeon, dated 1747. One of Vossius’s ‘more scientific tracts... [which] attracted considerable attention among his contemporaries’ (ODNB): he sought to explain the motion of the tides, a question of increasing interest, with reference to the heat of the sun exclusively, instead of the stars, the moon, or other forces. At the end he also discusses the use of a mercury barometer for predicting storms at sea. The following decade the text was translated into English to help it reach a wider audience.
