The odd marginal annotation; 20th-century ownership inscription to fly. An elegantly bound copy of this important collection, first published in 1848, of the writings of major Latin poets, including Catullus, Tibullus, Virgil, Persius and Claudianus, and a 'Supplementum in Virgilium' with his 'Ciris', 'Catalecta' and 'Copa'. The author, William Sidney Walker (1795-1846), was professor of Greek at Trinity College, Cambridge, and an important classicist, as well as a Shakespearean critic.

The first illustrated edition of this novel on a journey in Ireland of the fictional Penelope, with wood-engravings by C.E. Brock. Kate Douglas Wiggin (1856-1923), a pioneering American educator and author of numerous children's novels. The Mrs Charrington Wood to whom this copy was donated is probably the same portrayed much later, in a photograph of 1951, protesting in London with other ladies against poor quality coal.
