Washington, D.C.: Society for American Archaeology Book. Very Good. Soft cover. pp127-132, tables. Removed from AMERICAN ANTIQUITY, JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY FOR AMERICAN ARCHAEOLOGY, Volume 47, Number 1, January, 1982. VG. In report covers. May include a first or last copied page. Synopsis: "The poppy seed recovery test is a simple and inexpensive means of determining the effectiveness and consistency of any particular botanical flotation system. By adding a known number of charred poppy seeds (Papaver somniferum) to a sample before it is processed, archaeologists can check for loss, damage, and inter-sample contamination. Different systems, equipment, methods, and personnel tested since 1976 yield recovery rate percentages ranging from 6% to 98%. Such percentages provide a basis of comparison among widely differing flotation systems and enable the archaeologist to decide which flotation systems to use under particular logistical constraints.".

Removed from ANNUAL REPORT OF THE BOARD OF REGENTS OF THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION FOR THE YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 1941. VG. In plastic report covers. From the introduction: "The purpose of this article is not to stimulate the keeping of animals in captivity, but rather to make more tolerable and, if possible, more happy the lives of those that are inevitably to be kept in captivity. Most pets are kept because the captor is fond of them. Yet in altogether too many instances the animals are not properly cared for. The result is often suffering, ill health, or death due largely to lack of knowledge on the part of the captor, who would gladly provide his pet all it needed if he but knew how." Here is a footnote: "Animals of many kinds have not yet been successfully kept in captivity, or if they have been so kept, the fact is not generally known. therefore the information now available about the… Read More

Description:
London Book. Good. Soft cover. 1863, 16pp, removed from an unknown publication. Wrps. G. Robert John Walker, (1801-1869), born in Northumberland, Pennsylvania was a politician, lawyer, and economist. He served as a member of the U.S. Senate from Mississippi, as Secretary of the Treasury during the Polk administration, and as Territorial Governor of Kansas. Notwithstanding his former position in Mississippi as a senator and slave owner, he favored the Union cause during the Civil War and eventually freed some of his slaves. In his later years, he spent some time in London where he published a series of pamphlets, this being one of them, and practiced law in Washington, DC. This speech addresses the United Kingdom's concerns that America would suffer financially because of slavery. Also includes a short speech by William Evans of London, at the Cleveland , Ohio Banquet November 18, 1863, to celebrate the opening of the Atlantic and Great Western Railway. .
