Description:
Very Good. 1857. Lithograph. A lithograph with watercoloring based on an 1857 oil painting by New Bedford artist William Allen Wall. Mounted on a backing board, with a lighter spot on the right margin and a dampstain on the lower edge. 18" x 25 1/2" with an image area of 14 3/4" x 17 3/4". This variant print has no lithographer or artist listed, and the title is stenciled differently than in known 1858 prints by lithographer Charles Taber. The date 1857 is stenciled under the title by hand. There is one major difference in the background details between this copy and later lithographs. On the left side two horses are next to a mound of some sort, and in this print the fence around the mound is absent. No other copies are found with the fence absent. Other details appear the same, with differences in the water coloring and toning of the paper. We are guessing that this may have been from the original lithographic plate, possibly an early proof, with the fence detail… Read More

Description:
Palermo, North Dakota. Archive. Small archive of materials (several hundred items) collected by Harold D. Ward, Scout Master, Palermo, North Dakota 1938-1949. Collection of several hundred items of correspondence and ephemera relating to a small Boy Scout Troop in Palermo, North Dakota. Harold D. Ward apparently served as scoutmaster to as few as 7 scouts to as many as 19 scouts. Most of the material is dated to the late 1930's and early 40's to as late as 1949. In 1941, 19 boys were in the Troop 40 including two with the Ward surname, which we might assume to be sons of the scoutmaster. Much of the correspondence was between Ward and the Great Plains Area Council in Minot, North Dakota. Included too are newsletters, internal reports, board minutes, printed ephemera and related material. A couple items were from the Boy Scout Region 10 headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota. One common theme was apparent delinquent dues and the difficulty of sustaining a scout troop during the… Read More
