Henrietta Ward (1832-1909) was born into a family of artists and would marry an artist, Edward Matthew Ward (no relation) at the age of 16, in 1848. Some contemporaries would write her name as "Henrietta Mary Ada Ward Ward." The Wards socialized in an artistic and literary world calling C.L. Dodgson (Lewis Carroll), Charles Dickens and George Cruikshank friends. Henrietta gained favor of the Royals as she gave art lessons to several of the royal children of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Good to very good condition. Malvina Sarah Black Waring (1842-1930) was born and died in South Carolina. She graduated from Limestone College in Gaffney, SC in 1859, and wrote romance novels including "One Old Reb" (State Company, 1929), "That Sandhiller" (Neale Pub. Co., 1904) and "The Lion's Share" (Belford, Clarke and Co., 1888). Malvina helped organize the first chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in the state and served as its vice president-general for two years, as well as on various committees. She was a delegate to the Congress World's Fair Auxiliary of Representative Women and worked with the Columbia Hospital Association, Art League and Public Library Association. Both letters in very good to fine condition. Carbon copy paper is toned. Interesting and fun set of letters regarding the 1877 murder of Darwin, California madam Nancy Williams and interest expressed by lawyer/historian/cartographer Carl Wheat in the Williams legend. Marguerite Jenkins was the daughter of Darwin, California Postmaster Oliver Thorson and was working on a book about Darwin old-timers at the time of her note to Wheat. We find no record of such a book being published.
