Description:
Washington's First State of the Union Address & Jefferson's Report on Currency, Weights and Measures
Mathew Carey's American Museum was published from January, 1787 to December, 1792. According to Mott, it shared with The
Columbian Magazine the honor of being America's first successful magazine. This is volume eight (of twelve volumes with six issues each) with the issues from July through December, 1790.
The volume contains two signature pieces from the early Federal period -- Washington's first State of the Union address (Appendix II, pp. 47-48) and Jefferson's report on currency, weights and measures (Appendix II, pp. 35-46). Among the other noteworthy content is Ferdinando Fairfax's "Plan for liberating the negroes within the United States," essentially a gradual, voluntary, government-assisted emancipation with relocation of the freed slaves to a new colony in Africa.

Description:
First Listing in Bent's BibliographyThe first edition of one of the early classics about the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and accordingly, the first book listed in Bent's Bibliography of the White Mountains.

Two ownership inscriptions in ink on ffep: "Mrs. Newcomb, White Mountain House, 28 July 1846." and "From Coll. of N.L. Goodrich, P. F.[?] Norton, 1957." (Nathaniel Goodrich was the head of the Dartmouth College Library from 1912 to 1950.) A very nice example of a cornerstone work for any collection of the history or literature of the White Mountains.
Reference: Hanrahan [ed.], Bent's Bibliography of the White Mountains: p. 1. Condition: Embossed brown cloth with lightly faded areas. Bright gilt title on front board. Modest wear at head and tail of spine and tips of boards. Damp stain, progressively smaller, at upper tips of pages through page 50; occasional minor foxing thereafter. Overall, a very sound example.

Description:
Striking Pictorial Map of the WorldThis striking pictorial world map was issued as part of a promotion by the French chocolatier, Menier, in 1956. The richly illustrated and colorful map traces a trip around the world to 120 locations by the company's mascot, Jacqueline. The small illustrations are of place-specific flora and fauna, native costumes, architecture, etc. The map contains three insets: Israel, India and the Belgian Congo.

Customers collected (120) coupons that accompanied chocolate bars and affixed them to the respective spots on the grid below the map, then submitted the completed form to the Menier company for a premium or entry into a contest. As a result, the map is often seen with the lower panel missing.

J.B. Jannot, who sometimes used the pen name Jan-Loup, was a French artist, illustrator and cartoonist. Jannot did a similar map of Europe ("Grand Circuit des Capitales"), also for Menier, at about the same time.
