The letter is dated Monday, April 29th (the year is not given) and is addressed to the author Mrs. [Louisa Caroline] Tuthill. The letter, a note of thanks on receiving a copy of one of Mrs. Tuthill's books, concludes: What you term with so much naivette [sic] your "rye-field," must surely be titled my magic. That its produce may be nutritious to others, profitable to yourself, and acceptable to the Lord of the Harvest, is the wish of your friend, LHS. The letter is neatly creased from folding, with a short tear at one fold, else fine.

In a striking publisher's binding of dark blue cloth decorated on the spine and upper board with a wraparound seascape design, showing a ship upon the sea below layers of clouds, with the title and author's name in bright gilt. This is a near-fine copy, being clean and crisp overall, but skewed at spine, and with a touch of shelfwear to cloth. This is a pirated edition containing thirty stories, letters, and articles, and one poem, of which twenty-two of the stories and the poem had previously appeared in Turn-overs. The individual pieces were written during Kipling's journey in 1889 from India to England and were first printed in periodicals (The Civil & Military Gazette, The Week's News, and The Pioneer) between 1888-90. The binding is textured to highlight the pictorial design. This copy has been over-opened between pages 8 and 9. There is some shelfwear at the heel, crown and the outside corners. The gold lettering is bright, though the black illustration has been rubbed in one spot. This is a very good copy. (Livingston #328).

The booklet appears to have been cut out from the newspaper and stapled together by the reader. Edges of some pages have closed tears with no loss. A rare Lincoln piece for children.

Bound in worn, contemporary leather which is rubbed all over, has shallow loss (1/8") at heel and crown, and rounded fore-corners. Moderate foxing, occasional thumbing, and some ink corrections to text. Contemporary ownerships, in both ink and pencil, on first text page and on rear flyleaf, along with some juvenile practice of writing and sums in pencil on flyleaf and (chipped) rear pastedown. Joints cracked, spine shallowly chipped at heel and crown, corners and edges worn. Label gilt lettering slightly rubbed. Light to moderate occasional foxing. Offset tanning to title page. Ink ownership dated "June '97" to blank recto preceding title page. Overopened at title page; contents page through p. 10 partially detached. The last four blank pages are dampstained. The only 18th century edition published in America; the full text was not published in America until 1803. Benjamin Franklin called it 'the best Book of Logick in the World" [LCP First American Editions Exhibit (1984)]. Evans 21227. Quite scarce.
