Jones was a British civil servant and educationalist, once described as "one of the six most important men in Europe". First appointed as assistant secretary (later Deputy Secretary) to the Cabinet in December 1916 by David Lloyd George, Jones served as Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet for nearly twenty years and under four different Prime Ministers. He was much involved in the negotiations which led to the celebrated Anglo-Irish treaty of 1921 and the industrial troubles of the 1920s which culminated in the General Strike of May 1926. Signed by both Albert Schweitzer and his wife Helene. Books signed by Albert alone are uncommon; books signed by both Albert and Helene are scarce indeed.
While Albert received many of the accolades, including winning the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his "reverence for life" philosophy, Helene's biographer noted that she edited and proofread a number of Schweitzer's books in multiple fields as they worked together to realize their shared dream of devoting their lives to humanity. Together in 1913, Albert and Helene Schweitzer founded what is now the longest-running hospital established by Europeans in Africa, the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in current-day Gabon. With her quiet strength, clear sense of purpose, independent spirit, and wide range of skills and talents, Helene was a model for many other women who later served the Schweitzer Hospital.

Inscribed to Bill Smith and signed by Hofstadter. While not definitively established, the recipient could be fellow historian William E(rnest) Smith, whose work The Francis Preston Blair Family in Politics is cited by Hostadter as a source and influence on his interpretations on anti-bank views (pages 355-56).
Some pencil annotations sprinkled sporadically throughout the book. A very good copy in 60% present dust wrapper (missing the back panel and half of spine). A complete but good only dust wrapper from the third printing, published in 1949, is also included (picture of front panel is from first printing dust wrapper, picture of back panel is from third printing, picture of spine is an overlay of both).

Prior owner's bookplate, spine unevenly darkened else a fine and tight copy in a plain, heavy, nearly fine dust wrapper with some slight chipping to top spine and one small wrinkle. Original slipcase split along top front, top spine, and 4" on side spine.

First edition, the definitive biography of Andrew Jackson published in three separate volumes.
Volumes 1 and 2 inscribed by Remini, volume 3 signed. Recipient's name in volumes 1 and 3, hidden by dust wrapper front flaps. Spotting to top text block in volume 1, else a very good to near fine set in well preserved, unblemished dust wrappers.

Great full page inscription from Ginsberg "For Sally, pix of the orient", signed, dated and with a small flower drawing. Stamped in red with the author's oriental seal. Sally is Sally Grossman, American model and wife of Bob Dylan's one-time manager Albert Grossman. Sally is best known as the young woman languorously stretched out on the cover of Dylan's 1965 album Bringing it all Back Home. The album photograph came about after Dylan spent the summer writing and recording at the Grossmans' home. Grossman stated in a 1996 interview that she took part because "I was around, and Bob just asked me to do it".
Near fine with a small area of rubbing to front cover with some loss of color and some slight discoloration to the rear cover.

From the library of Beat poet Diane di Prima, with her signature on front free end paper. Di Prima and Ginsberg met during the mid-1960s. They went on to become two of the most famous poets of the Beat Generation. Di Prima and Ginsberg were both Buddhists, making this work -- written by Ginsberg during his travels through South East Asia and titled for the Hindu-Buddhist temple complex in Cambodia -- of particular interest to her.
Very good, dust soiled at top of text block, corners lightly bumped and some uneven fading to boards, in a good plus priced dust wrapper, shelf worn, creased and with a few chips at spine tips, rear panel soiled and with some staining.
