The book is very good plus with bright boards with a hint of dust staining and a little shelf wear along the bottom edge. VG/VG+. 1st Edition. 11 x 19cm black titled buff paper covered boards over teal cloth spine with black titles, 253pp. Original dust jacket designed by Eppo Doeve. The boards are a little toned around the edges and some spotting both front and back. Internally, there is a small bookseller's sticker to the bottom corner of the front pastedown but no name, inscription or bookplate. The pages are all quite spotted throughout, as are the edges of the text block. The dust jacket though, is very good. It has very minor loss to the fore edge corners and lower spine corners, a little loss and chipping at the spine head and a tiny closed tear in the centre of the spine foot tip. The rear panel is dust marked and lightly soiled (see image) but the front panel remains colourful and vibrant with a few tiny spots around the title and dust marking at the top edge. Together with an original unclipped dust jacket with a 3/6 net price. The boards have been well protected by the dust jacket and are clean and bright with only a little shelf wear to the bottom edge and a bruise to the top of the spine and top fore edge corner of the front board. Internally, there is a gift inscription to the front free endpaper and light spotting to the prelims and last couple of pages. The spine has five raised bands with a title label in one compartment and gilt stamped decoration in the other five. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers, [x] 192[2]pp with black and white illustrations by John Tenniel throughout. The half leather binding is rubbed at the corners, spine tips and edges with some surface abrasion but the binding is firm. Internally without name or inscription but with the bookplate of Thomas Weld-Blundell on the front free endpaper and just a touch of spotting and light marking to the text pages. VG. 16.5 x 24.5 yellow linen backed paper covers and 12 linen backed pages printed on one side only with hand coloured images of birds to illustrate each letter of the alphabet. There is also a small cut out hand coloured image of a dove tipped in to the back of one of the pages. The covers are a little dust stained and also a little creased, notably a vertical crease down the length of the front cover that can be felt rather than seen and creases to all corners. The paper on the covers has rubbed away on the spine and on a small section 2.5 x 1.5 cm on the rear cover near at the top of the joint, but the linen backing means that the binding remains firm.
