Description:
This bicycling manual is a second writing by the author, who added some 56 pages of updating to his original manual of 1879. The hardcover binding is black board, embossed to resemble leather, with gilt lettering on the front and spine. The front inscription--much larger than the title/author inscribed on the spine--heralds the manufacturer, Pope Mfg. Co. of Boston. Actually, Pope--a manufacturer of small labor-saving devices such as cigarette rollers--began with bicycles imported from England and expanded its production as the new conveyances became popular in America. Though the frontispiece states that the manual was "printed for the author," one wonders if perhaps Pope actually paid for it in exchange for the prominent advertisement on its front. Besides the separation of the spine cover from the front, the cover is in fair shape, with scuffing to the edges and corners. All pages are intact and firmly attached, without markings or inscriptions throughout. There are 24 unattributed illustrations,…

Description:
This book has a tight, full-red Morroco binding, embossed front and back and with raised ridges on the spine. The gilt title also appears on the spine. The end papers and page edges are beautifully comb-marbled, retaining their bright colors well. Some rubbing along the spine, and on the corner edges, otherwise the binding is near fine, sound and except for a few small pencil marks on the first page of the novel, the pages are clean. The book has 13 full-page hand-colored steel engravings, 69 wood engravings in the text. Illustrator John Leech (1817-1864) produced cartoons for Punch and illustrated Dickens' Christmas Carol. The book is an unforgettable portrait of English country life and the hunt fraternity that has thrived while many other Victorian novels disappeared into obscurity.
