Description:
Portland, ME, 1851. Signed William Pitt Fessenden letter from his law firm, Fessenden & Deblois. Fessenden was born in New Hampshire in 1806 but would spend most of his life in Maine. He was a lawyer, Representative, Senator, and later the United States Secretary of the Treasury under Lincoln during the Civil War. Fessenden was vehemently against Slavery and helped start an Anti-Slavery Coalition while in the Maine State Legislature. The letter itself is in good condition. On line 5 of the letter there is a section crossed out in ink with a correction above it. Stampless letter with address on back. Tear in the upper right corner. Some small ink lettering on back of the letter that was done later. Dated Sept. 15, 1851 from Portland, ME.

Priddle bookseller to the Trustees of the Church did help revise this edition but was not pleased with the results. A photocopied letter is tipped into the front of the book in which Priddle states that the has many problems but is still useful. This Copy is from the Wertkin collection, and he included some articles and information on the New York city Catholic Apostolic Church which closed in 1990's. Sometimes known as Irvingities the group believed that the Second coming was imminent. Rare.

Not a particularly rare Shaker title but this copy has a good inscription reading, "To dear Sr. Laura Beale with many loving thoughts from your gospel Sister Ada S. Cummings. 6.8.13." Ada Cummings (1862-1926) Was a Sabbathday Lake sister who was a schoolteacher, fan maker, Office Sister (see the Shaker Image, 1994). Laura Beal was a Shaker at Shirley, Harvard, and Mt. Lebanon. She left the Shakers in 1923 and spent her last years back in the Harvard area. One of the few books that we have had that was used in the Harvard community. Ericson, 5237.
