London: The Grey Walls Press, 1950. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. [viii], 299, [1]. Original red boards (without flyleaf as issued), spine lettered in gilt, dustjacket printed in pink and black. Some offsetting to title-page. Spine gilt tarnished, dustjacket a little rubbed to extremities. There seem to be two issues of this dystopian fantasy novel, with no established precedence: this one, in red boards, bound without flyleaf or half-title and with a Falcon Press colophon to the spine, and a variant in grey boards, with flyleaf and half-title and with ‘Grey Walls Press’ to the foot of the spine. Falcon and Grey Walls were partner presses from 1948, sharing resources (and debts, with both presses folding in 1954), and Falcon Press are listed as Canadian distributors to the verso of the title-page. This variant was perhaps bound for export but issued domestically - the dustjacket is priced in shillings on the flap.

Edinburgh: Sold by Bell & Bradfute [et al], 1798. FIRST EDITION, folio, pp. [ii], xi, [i], 556, 559-590, [1], 590-622, 621-623, [1]. Text continuous despite pagination. Contemporary marbled calf, edges sprinkled blue. A touch of spotting. Sometime rebacked in pale calf, hinges relined with tape, boards somewhat rubbed and scratched, wear to extremities. Armorial bookplate of Stuart-Stevenson of Torrance to flyleaf, ownership inscription of John Orr to first page of preface. This companion volume to Douglas’s 1764 Peerage of Scotland was announced to be in the press in September 1767, to cover the ‘Baronage’ - i.e. ‘the Scottish sense of those who held land in free barony as tenants-in-chief of the crown’ (ODNB). Bristol: Douglas Cleverdon, 1929. NO. 377 OF 527 COPIES, 8vo. pp. xxvii, [i], 127, [1] + 6 plates. Original quarter dark green cloth, sage green boards, spine lettered direct in gilt, top edge gilt. Boards a little soiled, front board unevenly sunned, a touch of wear to extremities. Numbered in ink to limitation-page. An early production from Bristol bookseller Douglas Cleverdon (1903-1987), reprinting Farquhar’s 1707 comedy with 7 new illustrations by Jean Emile Laboureur (1877-1943), 6 full-page plates and a title-page vignette. This copy is one of the 450 standard issue copies, but from the preferred issue: as the printed publisher’s note following the title-page explains, the odd-numbered copies (for Cleverdon to sell in the UK) were withdrawn and reprinted by Walter Lewis at The University Press, Cambridge after Cleverdon was dissatisfied with the quality of the work by the original printer, the Country Life Press in Garden City, New York. Glasguae [Glasgow]: In Aedibus Roberti Urie, 1749. 8vo, pp. iv, 250. Contemporary French red morocco, boards bordered with a triple gilt rule, spine divided by triple gilt rules, citron morocco label, flower tools in other compartments, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Paper age-toned, occasional spotting. Binding a little rubbed, spine very slightly sunned, short crack to foot of rear joint. The only printing of Sallust in Latin by Robert Urie, the Glasgow printer whose paper, types, and press-work competed with that of the Foulis Press, though he relatively rarely printed Greek or Latin texts like this one in the original. His work even had an international reach, judging by this copy, which was clearly bound in France very soon after publication. This is nonetheless a scarce book, recorded by ESTC in only 6 UK locations (and just two of those in Scotland: Aberdeen & NLS), plus 5 US holdings and one in Munich. ESTC T93522.

Glocester [Gloucester]: Printed by R. Raikes, 1789. 8vo, pp. xxvi, [3]-226, [2]. Contemporary sheep, unlettered spine divided by raised bands. Toned, some spotting. Boards scratched, joints and corners repaired, front flyleaf excised. Various ownership inscriptions of Samuel Swan, one amended to be a gift inscription to George Swan (Nov. 6 1841). A scarce provincial printing of this school edition of Sallust, originally published in 1734. The editor and translator John Clarke (1687-1734) was master of Hull Grammar School, and a pioneering advocate of language learning without rote memorisation and with the use of translations (for which he was attacked by traditionalists, including Ruddiman). This edition was printed by Clarke’s wife’s brother’s son, Richard Raikes (1736-1811), also an educationalist with an interest in Sunday schools. Purves Hume Campbell Bart. of that Ilk to pastedown, inscription to flyleaf: ‘Ex Libris Hugonis Rumii Campbelli’.

Binding somewhat rubbed, spine ends bumped. The scarce second book of Alexander Inkson McConnochie (1850-1936), who wrote several other guide books for regional Scotland. WorldCat and Library Hub note only a dozen copies of the first edition worldwide.

Rubbed, somewhat worn, small sections of leather peeling from boards, hinges starting. Ownership inscription of James J. Robertson to flyleaf, dated Dec 1953. A scarce Leith printing of John Howie’s 1775 collection of Presbyterian biographies. Library Hub records just 2 copies, at BL and Newcastle. There are also two recorded copies with a variant imprint, also printed by Allardice in 1816 but with J. Ogle’s name substituted for Thomas Nelson and the location changed to Edinburgh.

London: Printed for Henry Colburn, 1816. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. viii, 449, [1]. Untrimmed in original grey paper boards, backed in matching grey paper, printed paper label to spine. Intermittent spotting and some dustsoiling. Boards lightly marked, a touch of wear to extremities, short tear to head of rear joint. An early biographical reference to a number of Romantic authors, including Byron, Coleridge, and Wordsworth, and a significant mention of William Blake. Scarce in original boards. London: Printed for Taylor and Hessey, 1824. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. xxxvi, 179, [1]. Original finely-grained brown cloth, boards blocked in blind, spine lettered in gilt. A little faint toning and spotting. Extremities bumped and just a touch worn. Stamp of the Crookehaven Library to title-page. The first verse translation of the Birds of Aristophanes, produced by the Reverend H.F. Cary (1772-1844), best known for his version of the Divine Comedy. Mainly in ‘fourteeners’, the translation includes the first use of the term ‘Cloudcuckooland’.

Inverness: Printed at the 'Northern Chronicle' Office, 1895. 16mo, pp. 76, xxiv + 20 plates. Pages bordered in a pink rule. Stapled as issued in original wrappers printed in pink and brown. Staples rusted, wrappers soiled, joints splitting. Library Hub locates a single copy, in the NLS.	

London: W. Pickering, 1833. ONE OF 100 COPIES, 4to, pp. xii, [44]. Later quarter green roan, marbled boards, black morocco label. Just a little damp-marked and crinkled to fore-edge, particularly to title-page. A touch of wear to extremities. Presentation inscription to title-page: ‘Allan Cunningham Esq. with the Editor’s compts.’ A reprint of Birnie’s 1606 treatise, edited by advocate and antiquary William Barclay Turnbull (1811-1863). Turnbull was soon to found The Abbotsford Club, a text publication society dedicated to reprinting medieval and early modern texts, much like this one. This copy was presented by Turnbull to author and fellow antiquarian Allan Cunningham (1784-1842).

London: Pickering & Inglis, 1933. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, 8vo, pp. 228, [4, ads] + frontispiece and 12 double-sided plates. Original dark green cloth, colour-printed dustjacket. Some spotting, particularly to textblock edge. Spine-ends a little bumped, dustjacket soiled, torn and chipped with small losses at ends of spine panel. Signed to half-title ‘Dugald Campbell, 1934, Arbroath’, ‘the author’ in ink above. A work by Scottish missionary, amateur ethnologist and fellow of the Royal Geographical Society Dugald Campbell. It contains chapters on ‘Bantuland and Bantu Languages’, ‘Cannibalism, slavery, and Congo horrors’ and ‘Witchcraft and cruelties’. Rare in dustjacket.

London: Hayward Gallery Publishing, 2007. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST, large 8vo, pp. 137, [3] + 4 double-sided folding plates. Original pale grey cloth blocked in silver, colour-printed dustjacket. Dustjacket just a touch bumped to top edge. Signed by Antony Gormley to title-page. Preoduced to accompany the exhibition of the same name at The Hayward Gallery, 17th May to 19th August 2007.

One of 1200 copies produced to accompany the exhibition of the same name at The Independent Art Space, London, 28th November to 21st December 1996. This copy has been signed by Gormley in his bold hand to the title-page.
