INSCRIBED TO PINEROSHAW, [George] Bernard. Back to Methuselah: A Metabiological Pentateuch. 8vo, original cloth, fore and bottom edges uncut. London: Constable and Company, 1921. First English Edition. Significant inscribed copies in dust wrapper are scarce. Shaw's series of plays were published in London 22 days after the American edition, an edition whose misprints irritated the author. A significant association copy, presented one day before publication to one of the leading playwrights of the late Victorian and early Edwardian eras, inscribed on half-title: "To Arthur Pinero from Bernard Shaw. 22d June 1921." The two were friends, but Shaw would shortly be critical of Pinero as he "preferred to notice only Pinero's failings, finding him too timid in treating social problems and accusing him of opportunism in the way he introduced and handled them. Shaw's strictures were accepted, repeated and expanded upon, in the… Read More

Description:
FISH, Helen Dean.
The Boy's Book of Verse. A Treasury of Old and New Poems. With an Introduction by Franklin K. Mathews. 8vo, original dark red cloth (gilt lettering on spine slightly faded), colored pictorial label on front cover, pp. xviii, 406. New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1923.
First Edition. Fine copy in an excellent example of the dust jacket, which has the same illustration as the front cover label. The jacket is not price-clipped, the top edges have a few short tears, and there is a bit of blank paper missing at the top of the spine, not affecting any lettering. A delightful anthology meant to introduce boys to the pleasures of poetry. "...the anthology is a ripping read" in which the verse "explored themes of courage, daring, and honor as well as tragedy, death, war, and responsibility...Fish even included poems that did not appeal to her own sensibilities..."-Christine Rosen, Poetry Without Pandering, Sangamore Institute, July 15, 2003. Fish (1889-1953) was… Read More

LE CANNE DE COMBAT COLORED BROADSIDE SIGNED BY 14 "PROFESSORS" OF THE SCIENCE OF SELF-DEFENSE[LE CANNE DE COMBAT]. NAUDET, Caroline (1775-1839),engraver. Gloire aux Arts. Amer son Dieu. Honneur aux Maitres, et servir son Pays. Brevet de Canne. Folio hand colored engraved diploma, 16 1/2 x 18 1/4", inside mat (framed), signed "C. Naudet 1833." Paris: chez Jean, 1833. The Canne de Combat is a French style of martial arts using a cane. Alhough stick fighting is as old a humanity, this form is from 19th century France, "when the cane was an indispensable fashion accessory doubling as a fairly powerful self-defense weapon," as one expert wrote. It was a way to practice sword play without the sword, thus fewer injuries. Here we have the inside of a "combat" school a large blue curtain at the back, depicting a teacher in a duel with a student, and 13 professors watching, six on one side, seven on the other, each side flanked by a Roman bust sculpture on a pedestal, underneath one is "C.… Read More
