Thomas Baines joined Augustus Gregory as official artist and storekeeper, in the expedition across northern Australia between 1855-1857 sponsored by the Royal Geographical Society to evaluate the northern area of Australia for suitability as a colonial settlement. The Baines River was named after him.CONDITION : Faint foxing to the top of the sheet.

Pigal was an important French caricaturist who worked mainly in lithography. He caricatured contemporary customs and social types and amongst his favourite characters were lecherous old men.Acid mark from previous mount.

1859. Wood-engraving. 275mm by 210mm (sheet). Depicts Sir John O'Shanassy (1818-1883), the Victorian Premier. From 'Melbourne Punch'. Melbourne Punch began in 1855. From 1855-1861 Nicholas Chevalier was one of the principal cartoonists most of whose work was engraved by Samuel Calvert. Reverse blank.

1879. Wood-engraving. 270mm by 400mm (sheet). 'Balloon Making - Mr Coxwell's Manufactory at Seaford' Henry Coxwell (1819-1900) was an English aeronaut. In 1848 he became a professional aeronaut, making numerous public ascents in the chief continental cities. Returning to London, he gave exhibitions from the Cremorne Gardens and subsequently from the Surrey Gardens. By 1861 he had made over 400 ascents. In 1862 in company with Dr James Glaisher, he attained the greatest height on record, about 11,887 m (39,000 ft).Coxwell had a balloon factory in Richmond Road Seaford SussexWood-engraving from the Illustrated London News of 1879. Sophie Blanchard (1778-1819) was a French aeronaut and the wife of ballooning pioneer Jean-Pierre Blanchard. Blanchard was the first woman to work as a professional balloonist, and after her husband's death she continued ballooning, making more than 60 ascents. Known throughout Europe for her ballooning exploits, Blanchard entertained Napoleon Bonaparte, who promoted her to the role of "Aeronaut of the Official Festivals", replacing Andre-Jacques Garnerin. On the restoration of the monarchy in 1814 she performed for Louis XVIII, who named her "Official Aeronaut of the Restoration". In 1819, she became the first woman to be killed in an aviation accident when, during an exhibition in the Tivoli Gardens in Paris, she launched fireworks that ignited the gas in her balloon. Her craft crashed on the roof of a house and she fell to her death."

1943. Lithograph with original hand-colouring. 245mm by 150mm (sheet). Native plant of Australia. Stella Ross-craig was an artist and illustrator for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Lilian Snelling (1879-1972) was the principal artist and lithographer to Curtis's Botanical Magazine between 1921 and 1952 and "was considered one of the greatest botanical artists of her time". From Curtis's Botanical Magazine. William Curtis (1746-1799) was a trained pharmacist, in London, who maintained a large garden and devoted himself to the study of its flora. He began publishing the Curtis Botanical Magazine in 1787. Accompanied by original text describing features of the plant, when it was introduced and by whom, and whose collection it comes from.

Haussmann was responsible for the redevelopment of Paris 1852-70. From 'La Menagerie Imperiale'. Published in Paris by Coulboeuf. Paul Hadol was a French illustrator, draftsman and caricaturist. During the 1870 war he published La Menagerie imperiale (The Imperial Zoo) - caricatures which placed the heads of members of the disgraced Bonaparte family and their conspirators on the bodies of animals. Faint vertical crease.

1807. Copper-line engraving. 60mm by 100mm (image only). A small French engraving from 'Voyage et transportation du fameux Barrington a Botan Bay, dans la Nouvelle Hollande', issued as part of 'Bibliotheque Geographique et Instructive des Jeunes Jens' published in Paris. George Barrington (1755-1804) was a famous Irish-born pickpocket. In 1790,he was transported to Australia. After working for the police, he received an official pardon and in 1796 he was made chief constable at Parramatta. His name is used as author to several accounts of early life in Sydney but whether he was actually the author is in doubt. Rare.

Phillippe Benoist was one of France's most gifted topographical artists of the 19th century, he was both a master lithographer and painter. He began his career in Paris and by 1836 he was exhibiting his views at the Paris Salons and continued to do so until 1879. As an original lithographic artist, Philippe Benoist specialized in exterior and interior views of many famous European buildings. Light foxing in margins. Foxing on reverse of the sheet.
