The C Comics series in which Brainard drew the panels and asked other writers to fill in the dialogue formed both an homage and a reinterpretation of the comic strip form. Contributors included John Ashbery, Bill Berkson, Ted Berrigan, Dick Gallup, Barbara Guest, Kenneth Koch, Frank Lima, Jimmy Schuyler, Frank O"Hara,Kenward Elmslie,Peter Schjeldahl,Tony Towle, Ron Padgett and many other notables of the early 60's New York School of Poetry. Only two issues of this magazine were published with this copy being the First Issue which appeared in 1964. Covers mildly worn and soiled. Usual chipping to edges. Illustrated with photographs, detailed plans, period advertiaing, etc. California Arts & Architecture was formed in 1929 by a merger of Pacific Coast Architect, established 1911, and California Southland, established 1918. Architecturally it was devoted to eclectic residential design-Tudor, Spanish Colonial, Mediterranean, Georgian, California amorphous. It preferred classic in larger projects, and now and then Art Deco (the Richfield Building, Bullocks Wilshire, both in Los Angeles) In 1930 it was a substantial magazine. Issues ran from 70 to 80 pages with lots of advertising. The Dustwrapper bears the price of $3.00, photograph of J.D. Salinger by Lotte Jacobi to rear panel. The Dustwrapper measures 3mm taller than the book, indicating that it is most probably a Second Printing dustwrapper-issued the same month as the First Printing dustwrapper. With the exceptions of the tiny differential in height and a near microscopic difference in placement of the Dollar Sign aside of the price, the First and Second Printing Dustwrappers are identical to one another. The Catcher in the Rye is a key-work of the nineteen-fifties in that the theme of youthful rebellion is first adumbrated in it, though the hero, Holden Caulfield, is more a gentle voice of protest, unprevailing in the noise, than a militant world-changer.
