Description:
Salina, Ks: Atherton & Hopkins, 1900. Very good.. Cabinet card photograph, 5.5 x 4 inches, on a slightly larger studio mount printed "Atherton & Hopkins Salina, Kans." Minor edge wear, small "X" handwritten above one subject's head within the image, a few small paper remnants to verso. A striking image of an African-American family of six, a mother and five children, living in Kansas around the last decade of the 19th century. The African-American population in Kansas grew in the 1880s as families left the South to escape the rollback of Reconstruction-era protections. African Americans settled across Kansas, largely in the eastern states. The present photograph was taken in Salina, in central Kansas, about a hundred miles from either Wichita or Topeka. Images of African-American families in Kansas in the 19th century are exceedingly rare.

Minor wear to mount. A scarce, 19th-century image of the Fort Mojave Reservation, established in 1890 on its namesake reservation on the Arizona side of the Colorado River. The reservation straddles the river in the at the confluence of California, Nevada, and Arizona, occupying parts of all three states, and a boarding school operated there from its founding until the 1930s. The present image was taken by an experienced if not professional, but unnamed, photographer, and shows the office of the school, with another building to the left and the desert in the background to the right. The school's second Superintendant, John J. McKoin, and its clerk, Maude A. Eason, stand posed on the front porch of the office building. Mexico City: Imprenta de Antonio Vanegas Arroyo, 1898. 30pp. Small quarto. Original printed wrappers, stapled. Wraps faded, with light wear to spine and edges; a few short, closed tears, small chips, etc. Scarce "melodrama biblico," which dramatizes the Cain and Abel story into a short play in two acts. The work was published by the late 19th- and early 20th-century king of the Mexican popular press, Antonio Vanegas Arroyo. The author, Constancio Suarez was almost completely unknown until nearly 100 years after he published this work and another melodrama that follow the story of Isaac as well as a few comedies. Description:
Mexico: Imprenta de Antonio Vanegas Arroyo, 1910. About very good.. Broadside, approximately 15.75 x 11.75 inches. Some edge wear and minor losses at lower edge, not affecting text. Light toning and dust soiling. Scarce calavera broadside published by Antonio Vanegas Arroyo in 1910. This work features a large woodcut illustration of a structure vaguely reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower, but composed of skulls and bones rather than iron. Institutions variously give credit for the artwork to Jose Guadalupe Posada or to his influential predecessor Manuel Manilla, thus demonstrating the stylistic similarity between the two Mexican illustrators as well as the influence that Manilla had on Posada; however, both Ron Tyler in his bibliography of Posada and the Metropolitan Museum of Art attribute this work to Manilla. The text, as one might gather from the title, is a verse catalog of the numerous criminal skeletons incarcerated in the calavera prison and their various trespasses. An unusual iteration of the… Read More

Rare German-Californian periodical, featuring an almanac, calendars of events around the state, travel articles, cartoons, and numerous local advertisements for the German-speaking population of California. One article is entitled "Der Islam als internationale Religion" ("Islam as an International Religion"), with the subtitle "Views of Educated Mohammedans." Yet another article is all about divining from variations in one's hand shape. There are photos of American Indians on parade in Vienna, the Prince and Princess of Japan, and a large zeppelin one can take to travel from Germany. Though presumably an annual, all copies located in OCLC are for this year -- we locate three copies, at California State University, the University of Cincinnati, and the National Library of Germany.

A representative issue of a scarce Bay Area African-American weekly newspaper. Established in 1919, the California Voice later touted itself as "The oldest Black paper West of the Rockies." The present issue includes a mixture of race-related stories and straightforward news articles. The former are represented by pieces on the front page focusing on police discrimination, housing desegregation, civil rights, voter suppression, and other issues. The banner headline relates to the honoring of Smith Robinson as "one of its foremost citizens" by the city of Healdsburg. Other articles in the newspaper relate to African-American society, sports, and editorials, interspersed with numerous advertisements for local businesses, including Safeway. San Antonio: Martin Blandford, 1916. Very good.. Panoramic silver gelatin photograph, 10 x 47.75 inches. Minor surface wear and soiling, light occasional wrinkling. An informative panoramic photograph picturing the breadth of Camp Wilson at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio at the outset of World War I and during the Mexican border troubles in 1916. Camp Wilson was established by the United States Army in the year the present photograph was taken as a staging ground for Army and National Guard troops heading for Mexico during the Punitive Expedition. It was renamed the next year as Camp Travis, and then used as a training center for American troops heading across to Europe during World War I. The panorama captures the numerous buildings, tents, and other infrastructure ranged across the base, with an information tent and recruitment center at center-right. [St. Louis, 1907. About very good.. 41pp. Oblong quarto. Original blue wrappers, front cover gilt; stapled. Light wear and soiling, some creasing. Frontispiece torn near staples. Minor soiling and wear internally. Prospectus and promotional for the Belshazzar Gold Mining Company of Quartzburg, Idaho, headquartered in St. Louis. Illustrated with views of the mine and its surroundings, the work contains several testimonial reports as to the integrity and value of the mine describing its geology, improvements, cost, and potential. There are also several maps within the text. The Belshazzar Mine was first discovered in 1875, with other mines in the area, and showed significant ore deposits. The Belshazzar Gold Mining Company was incorporated in July 1906, and mined considerable ore that year. This work, then, is to promote the newly formed company and its operations. Success was short-lived -- the mine closed in 1909, and the company went defunct in 1912. Not in OCLC.

Mexico City: Mariano Ontiveros, 1821. Very good.. [4]pp., on a half-sheet bifolium. Disbound from a sammelband. Minor dampstaining and wear at edges. A brief series of parables on the dangers of a large standing army, and the dangers that its existence might bring about during periods of political instability. Cranes, rats, and cheese; a Gypsy, and horse, and a cat; and a convent of mixed religious orders are all invoked to argue that the size and heterogeneous command of the Mexican army that grew out the independence movement ought to be reduced. Anonymous, but signed "Wagcinton Napoleon" [sic] above the colophon. An interesting example of pamphleteering in Mexico in the period immediately after independence, and the exchange of thought in print concerning the organization and operation of the new government. Guatemala: Imprenta de Joachin de Arevalo, Impressor de, 1756. Very good plus.. [23]pp. Small quarto. Later marbled wrappers. Very light dampstaining at fore-edge, otherwise minor toning and dust soiling. A quite rare, mid-18th-century Guatemalan imprint, comprising a pastoral letter by Francisco José de Figueredo y Victoria, the Archbishop of Guatemala, that advises immediate and intense penitence by worshippers in the wake of the Great Lisbon Earthquake, which struck the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa on November 1, 1755, and destroyed the Portuguese capital. Figueredo was a native of New Granada and became the Bishop of Popayán before being installed as Archbishop of Guatemala in 1753. In the present letter to the public, he ruminates on the numerous biblical exemplars of natural disasters and calls upon the faithful to exercise themselves strenuously in prayer and penitence as a response to such obvious and devastating Divine Justice. A large and unrecorded broadside, dated June 12, 1863, printed in two columns and addressed to Manuel Suarez Fortoul, the chief magistrate of Bogota regarding the recently passed law on the property of religious orders. The law, which allowed for taxes on such property, caused much consternation in Colombia, as did similar laws elsewhere in Latin America during the mid-19th century. Here, the author Manuel I. Mexico City, 1833. About very good.. Broadsheet, approximately 12 x 8.5 inches. Previously folded. Light wear at edges and along old fold. Moderate dust soiling. An animated and rare 1833 broadsheet attack on the political beliefs and actions of Lorenzo de Zavala, one of the foundational figures of the Texas Republic. Zavala was a prominent liberal Mexican politician, who helped to draft the Constitution of 1824, and served as president of Congress and Secretary of Finance. In 1829, he began investing in Texan lands, thus beginning his close involvement in Texas. When this document was issued, Zavala was serving as Governor of the State of Mexico. The present address, styled as an open letter to Mexican president Santa Anna, and dated June 1, 1833, from Tlalpan, was authored by conservative General Gabriel Durán, who makes a vehement attack on Zavala's patriotism and character, urging Santa Anna to cut ties with Zavala completely.
