Preston: Akros Publications, 1968. FIRST EDITION, NO. 45 OF 50 COPIES SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, 8vo, pp. 61, [1]. Original red boards, spine lettered in gilt, yellow dustjacket printed in black, red and grey. Top edge of boards and spine-panel of dustjacket sunned. Numbered in ink to limitation page and neatly signed by the author to flyleaf. The first edition of Scott’s fourth collection was published in an edition of 500 copies, with the first 50 being numbered and signed, as here.

The first printing of the first two volumes of Alexander Carmichael’s (1832-1912) magnum opus, which eventually grew to encompass 6 volumes over the following 7 decades. After turning down offers from publishers Carmichael, having collected and translated the material, published it himself in this lavish limited-edition set; it was not reissued until 1928, lightly edited by his daughter Ella. Boards a little mottled, dustjacket lightly toned, sunned to spine panel, 2 small tears to edges of folds. ‘5’ in pencil to dustjacket front panel. The fifth book in the series ‘A Dance to The Music of Time’.

Later half dark blue morocco, red and black patterned cloth boards, spines divided by raised bands between double gilt rules, second and fourth compartments gilt-lettered direct, the others with central diamond-shaped gilt tools, marbled edges and endpapers. A few tiny areas of rubbing, particularly to joints. Ownership inscription of Ruth H. Munro Scott dated 1943 to endpapers, along with a gift inscription to Rosalie in the same hand dated 1944 in vol. 1. An attractive copy of an early reprint of this anthology, edited by Charles Gibbon (1843-1890) and first published 1873-4.

Rear joint of vol. 1 mostly split and board almost loose, otherwise spines somewhat sunned, a little wear to corners and spine ends, labels browned (apart from on vol. 4) and a bit chipped at edges (more so on vol. 6), vol. 6 with a small triangular tear to cloth of lower board. The last and greatest catalogue of the Library of the Faculty of Advocates produced before the creation of the National Library of Scotland (which took over the non-legal material and copyright deposit function) - an ambitious record of a major collection. Original grey cloth, front boards blocked in black, spines lettered in gilt, dustjackets printed in grey and black. Fine copies. Inscribed by the author to a named recipient on both title-pages.

[London]: [n. pr.], 1804. 8vo, pp. 16. Disbound and loose. A little minor spotting. A seemingly unrecorded example of one of numerous catalogues issued by the Architectural Library, a firm of publishers, booksellers, and engravers taken on by Isaac Taylor in 1770, then run jointly with and in 1798 handed over to his son Josiah. They appeared under the same title in multiple formats with some frequency and are entirely undated, making identification complicated - though this one is printed on paper watermarked '1804'. It in any case corresponds to none of the half-dozen from Josiah's sole ownership recorded by ESTC: the first line of text matches T162541 (NLS only, [1800?]), though that is a 4-page folio. The BL holds a c.1805 example (RB.23.a.879) which is very similar to this one but post-dates it, on internal evidence, and Library Hub locates no other potential matches.

[London]: The Blackamore Press, 1930. NO. 283 OF 700 COPIES, 8vo, pp. 101, [3]. 6 woodcuts by John Nash included in pagination. Partially unopened in original green cloth, front boards blocked and lettered in gilt, spine lettered in gilt. A little spotting. A little marked, spine somewhat soiled. In addition to the 700 numbered copies the press also issued 50 signed copies on Japanese vellum.

Edinburgh: Reprinted by A. Neill & Co, 1801. 8vo, pp. 57, [1]. Disbound. A touch of faint spotting. A scarce reprinting of this translation from Ovid into Scots, by Robert Forbes. Little is known of him - he seems to have been born in Buchan but plied his trade as a hosier in London. Evidently an educated man who ‘possessed a large fund of the humorous,’ he also published another excerpt from Ovid and a few original pieces (Walker, The Bards of Bon-Accord 1375-1860, 1887). This edition was also issued as part of a collection of macaronic verse and other translations between Scots and Latin.

Vellum just slightly soiled. Small ownership inscription dated 1939 to flyleaf. An attractively bound copy of the foolscap octavo issue with a Britannia watermark. Quite scarce: ESTC locates 4 copies, BL, Edinburgh, Mitchell Library, and Oxford Taylorian. Gaskell 679, ESTC T85890.

Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, spines divided by triple gilt rules, lettered and tooled in gilt, edges sprinkled red. A hint of spotting. Bindings rubbed, joints of first volume cracking but sound, gilt rubbed away from spines. Armorial bookplates of K. Somerville to front pastedowns. The first edition of prolific Scottish writer George Robert Gleig’s (1796-1888) third work of fiction, published while he served as chaplain at Chelsea Hospital. It was his first novel published as such under his own name, following an anonymous story and his best known work, a collection of articles based on his experiences in the Peninsular War, along with various non-fiction books.

Foxed and toned in places. Rubbed, corners worn. Front flyleaf inscribed: ‘Henry Heeley His Book’ and ‘Caroline Heeley, the gift of her Brother HH’. The seventh annual volume of this near-miniature (11cm tall) long-running monthly periodical of stories and poems in the usual improving vein of the Religious Tract Society. The individual issue titles continue ‘Or, Sunday Scholar’s Reward’.

Dorchester, Mass.: Walter Baker & Co., Ltd., 1910. 12mo, pp. 62 + 6 double-sided colour plates, three images with gold or silver foil. Stapled in original embossed pictorial wrappers printed in colour with gold foil. Central bifolium loose. Wrappers somewhat creased and rubbed, tiny edge tears, staples rusted. A charming recipe pamphlet devoted to chocolate and cacao, with contributions from a dozen women. The introduction remarks upon the growing popularity of chocolate, and asserts that ‘A cup of chocolate made with sugar and milk is in itself a fair breakfast.’

London : Faber and Faber Limited, 1931. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. [4]. Stitched as issued in plain paper wrappers within terracotta paper wrappers printed in black with integral flaps. Lightly soiled, 2cm split to outer wrapper at base of spine fold. The 38th and final Ariel Poem pamphlet from Faber and Faber, with attractive illustrations by Barnett Freedman, that to the first page in full colour.

Palma de Mallorca: [s.n.], 1955. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, SIGNED BY THE TRANSLATOR, 8vo, pp. xvi [misprinted as xiv], 115, [1] + 12 double sided leaves of black and white plates. Title-page printed in red and black. Original green and white patterned paper boards with black illustration to front board, dustjacket printed in blue and black, pale green patterned endpapers. One tiny edge tear to a single leaf. Dustjacket a little rubbed and creased to extremities. Signed by the translator (later in life) to title-page along with the ink stamp of Valldemosa. The first published work of English writer Alan Sillitoe (1928-2010), his translation of Luis Ripoll’s account of Frédéric Chopin’s stay in Majorca with George Sand in Valldemosa, a recently abandoned monastery, where he composed some of his famous preludes. Edinburgh: Printed for J. Ogle [et al], 1812. 8vo, pp. iv, 291, [1]. Original grey boards, printed paper label to spine, edges untrimmed. Joints starting, front joint previously reglued. Some wear to extremities with small loss to head of spine. Shelfmark label from Cortachy Castle to front pastedown, owner’s inscription of Lady Ogilvy to flyleaf. Claudius Buchanan (1766-1815) was an East India Company chaplain, Vice-Provost of a college in Kolkata and evangelist for the Christian faith in Asia. He toured India extensively in 1806 and 1807, and following his return to England he published Christian Researches in Asia in 1811; it went through 9 editions in 2 years. This copy comes from the library at Cortachy Castle in Angus, the seat of the Ogilvy family since 1473.

Edinburgh: Reprinted by A. Neill & Co., 1801. 8vo, pp. 17, [1]. Disbound. A touch of spotting. A translation into Latin by clergyman, historian and correspondent of Robert Burns John Skinner (1721-1807) of a Scots poem long-if-fancifully attributed to King James I. Also issued as part of a collection of macaronic poetry and translations.

London: John W. Parker and Son, 1845. 12mo, pp. vii, [i], 288, 4 (ads). Original brown textured cloth, spine lettered in gilt, boards blocked in blind. A little light dustiness in places. Spine ends a touch worn, gutter cracking in a few places but all gatherings firmly held. True to his name, Sir Arthur Helps (1813-1875), later clerk of the Privy Council, took up social issues in the 1840s and 1850s, with among his efforts this ‘paternalist essay on the relations between master and man’, first published 1844. This second edition is attractively printed by Charles Whittingham and was also issued by William Pickering.
