NAPLES: IGNAZIO RUSSO, 1753. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in contemporary vellum over boards. Foxing. Complete with the 15 engraved plates. Little is known of the author other than that he wrote another book on navigation in 1750. This work on the sector was translated into Spanish in 1758.By the time this book was published, the design of the European sector had become standardized. Compare this design, for example, with that in the fourth edition of the works of Ozanam seventeen years earlier (L'usage du compas de proportion, 1736). The physical design of Pagnini's instrument is better (with pegs and decorative tenons to hold the two legs in alignment), but the scales are essentially identical. The work is well illustrated with engravings showing exactly how a pair of dividers should be used to take the various lateral and transverse measurements.Pagnini provides eight tables that detail the exact markings for each scale. He also provides other material for reference use, e.g., he includes… Read More

Rome: Nella Stamperia di Gio. Battista de Caporali, per andare all'Orso, 1729. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in later carta rustica. A fine, fresh copy on crisp paper. Very faint soiling to upper margin. A large historiated initial, decorative head- and tail-pieces. With the arms of Cardinal Polignac on the title page. The Rococo painter Pier Leone Ghezzi (1674-1750), charged with staging the events, had the piazza "restored" to its ancient glory as the stadium of Domitian, the foundations of which are buried beneath the piazza and give the modern space its distinctive, oblong shape. The spectacle was captured by the Roman painter Giovanni Paolo Pannini (1691-1765), who produced a painting of the Piazza in its glory, of which two copies exist. Description:
[Breslau]: [Adam Dion], 1521. Hardcover. Fine. Modern marbled boards. Lightly soiled and spotted, inky fingers (possibly those of a careless pressman) have left minor smears in the blank margins. One of fourteen printings recorded in the Benzing of this German-language edition. VD16 attributes the printing to Adam Dion of Silesia in Breslau while Benzing lists Hieronymus Höltzel in Nuremberg as the possible printer. The first Latin edition of the missive was published in 1521 by Thomas Anshelm in Hagenau. This letter was written by Luther on April 28th, three days after he left the Diet of Worms. A Latin edition, published in 1521 by Thomas Anshelm in Hagenau (Benzing 1027) was addressed to the Emperor Charles V. This German edition (translated by Spalatin?) is addressed to the electors, estates, and princes of the Holy Roman Empire. Luther was granted 21 days (April 25 to May 15) of safe travel back to Wittenberg, providing he did not preach, write, or disturb the peace in any way. Luther was… Read More
