Louisville: The Filson Club Book. Good. Soft cover. pp119-138. Removed from THE FILSON CLUB HISTORY QUARTERLY, Vol 27, No. 2, April, 1953. In report covers. G. May include a first or last copied page. From the opening paragraph: "The importance of Daniel Boone in the history of American heroes and symbols can hardly be overstated. He set the general pattern which later western heroes were to follow; he personified the epical move westward during colonial and Revolutionary times; he came to symbolize the frontiersman and the self-reliant hunter in American life. Boone made the mold into which Davy Crockett, Kit Carson, Paul Bunyan, and the american cowboy were poured and has managed to maintain his unique importance despite the number of heroes who have seemed on the verge of eclipsing him and occupying his place in the nation's imagination.".

Ex-lib, non-circulating, with the bookplate of Ursuline College and Msgr. F. N. Pitt. Fr. Felix N. Pitt, who served as the superintendent of Catholic schools in Louisville, Kentucky, had a tremendous collection of Kentucky books. He lived at the Ursuline Motherhouse, serving as senior chaplain, and that's where his books were kept. Upon his death in 1971, the books were willed to the sisters. The archdiocese intervened on the grounds that Fr. Pitt's property was their property; but, after some legal wrangling, the nuns were successful in proving… Read More

Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. (1944), 218pp. Lightly worn, previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown, else VG. The author, Margaret Rosemary Norris Kutak, (1905-1999), was born in Anderson, Indiana and lived in Louisville, Kentucky, where her husband taught at the University. She wrote two murder mysteries in the 1940s which were well received, this being the first. From the publisher's notes: "The ghost of a woman whose living body haunts her former husband and his second wife, her adoring brother, her friends - is brought back to life by a miracle of modern science. Eve Minary's dark fragile beauty concealed a twisted mind - concealed too, dangerous knowledge. With an extraordinary tensity of brooding horror, the story moved rapidly to Murder; and young Doctor Marc Castleman has to act fast to save his professional reputation.".

Columbus,: Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society, Book. Good. Soft cover. pp425-427. Removed from OHIO ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL PUBLICATIONS VOLUME XIV, 1905. Edited by Fred J. Heer. In plastic report covers. Some of the articles from this volume may contain a first and/or last copied page. In 1778, a man named Darnell was with Daniel Boone and twenty six others, when they were captured by Indians and taken to Old Chillicothe. Darnell was able to escape by making a death defying leap of some thirty feet across a deep gorge, catching on to some bushes on the other side. Had he not made it, he would have died from the fall, but he chose to make the jump rather than to be retaken by the Indians and subjected to a slow and painful death. The Indians, after seeing his remarkable leap, believed that he was under the protection of the Great Spirit and spread the story of the most amazing feat they had ever witnessed..
