1855. Daily California Chronicle Vol. IV No. 81 August 23, 1855 4-page newspaper (20.75 x 27.75 inches) with light foxing and toning. Minor separation at folds. Complete. Good Condition. Early California newspaper, the Daily California Chronicle began publishing November 21, 1853, and ceased May 12, 1858. In addition to the many ads, the paper focuses on transportation with lists of "River and Harbor Steamers", plus schedule of stage lines servicing San Jose, San Mateo, Monterey, Santa Cruz, Stockton and Sacramento. Editor Frank Soule, in his column on page 2 proclaims, "The snorting of the first "iron horse" in California has been heard. The flame from his red nostrils has been seen. The dust, like a cloud has arisen along his course. Civilization has mounted her strongest steed here on this western Pacific slope, where but just now the war whoop preceded the steam whistle, and the squaw did the drudgery henceforth destined for the locomotive...and the era of railroad reality has commenced."… Read More

Field tests found the guns awkward to use, which perhaps is why this little instruction sheet was printed. Online sources claim the 6th Ohio Cavalry was one of the few units to employ these guns. A larger order was placed by the British Government. Several of these broadsides have… Read More

Good Condition. Clipped signature includes manuscript text on both sides and measures 2 x 6 3/8 inches. Includes bold signature and Dec. 1685 date.
