London: Printed for H. Twyford, T. Dring, J. Place, W. Palmer, 1661. FIRST EDITION, folio, pp. [xvi], 168, [2], 84, [2], 85-196. A few pages misnumbered. Contemporary sheep, boards bordered with triple blind rules, spine divided by raised bands and tooled in gilt. Paper a little toned, contents leafed creased and rubbed to edges. Worn and rather marked with some small losses to spine ends, hinges split but joints holding, pastedowns lifted, flyleaves torn away, label lost. Double-sided contents leaf in contemporary hand tipped in to pastedown, a few page numbers corrected in ink. The first edition of a popular 17th-century history of the Reformation, which was reprinted twice in the following decades. An early owner has provided a lengthy and detailed contents list in a small but legible hand to a tipped-in leaf, something that the publishers also felt a need for as the 1670 second edition contains a printed and even more extensive table of contents to the rear. Edinburgh: Printed for and sold by R. Fleming, 1766. 12mo, ff. 24, pp. 25-120. First three gatherings printed on alternate openings only. Contemporary vellum, boards bordered with double blind rules. A touch toned. Binding a little soiled, small patch of wear to front board. Clipping of signature of J. Millar pasted to pastedown, contemporary ink notes to flyleaves, red duty stamp to first page. An attractive pocket almanac, in which a previous owner has made some notes to the flyleaves, mostly relating to money debited and credited, and lent to a woman named Tiby Brown to buy shoes. Scarce, with Library Hub recording 3 copies, all in Scotland: NLS, NMS and St Andrews.

Edinburgh: A & J Aikman, 1816. Elephant folio, ff. [174 (of 176)]. A run from issue 773 to 866, lacking 16 issues (789, 802, 816-7, 822, 827, 830-1, 833, 837, 840, 842, 844-5, 851, 864) and with the second page of two issues of the Star (773, 828) torn out, and a couple of corners torn away with loss to text. Early nineteenth-century half calf, marbled boards, spine divided by raised bands between double gilt rules, red morocco label, another compartment dated in gilt direct. Variable soiling and spotting, some wear to edges, leaves at beginning and end rather creased vertically. Binding rubbed, joints cracking at ends but strong, rear flyleaf mostly torn away, marbled paper partially worn from boards. Original limp sheep with wallet-style fold-over front flap, spine lettered in gilt, rear cover with a sheet of card tucked under the head and tail turn-ins forming a pocket. A little browned and soiled. Rubbed and worn, particularly at spine ends, lower edge, and flap, no front endpapers.

Each booklet bound as issued with illustrated self-wrappers. Modern brown textured cloth, front board lettered direct in gilt, edges sprinkled red. A little soiled, some edge tears sometime repaired with tape, small section of one wrapper torn away. The first printings of four of Caldecott’s popular ‘Picture Books’, which were much-reprinted into the 20th century. The first one here illustrates a poem by Oliver Goldsmith.

Rubbed, stitching strained in places, front joint split but cords holding, a little wear to extremities, flyleaves excised. Pencil inscription to rear pastedown: ‘Inverary Edinburgh 2. June 1807’, ‘Inverary June’ in pencil to half-title in same hand, a few marginal pencil doodles. A scarce Edinburgh printing of lexicographer William Scott’s guide to clear speech. Although similarly-titled to Scott’s ‘Lessons in Elocution’ which first saw print in 1779, it is a different work, with ‘Lessons’ being more of a themed anthology to be read aloud; the present work ‘Elements’ is organised around rules of elocution followed by short examples. Binding a little soiled, spine darkening, stain to rear board and endpapers, spine splitting in one place, front hinge weak but cords holding. folded sheet of contemporary calculations loosely inserted, pencil ownership inscription of John Coll Senhouse to flyleaf. An adaptation from Robert Simson’s celebrated edition of Euclid by Rev. Jackson Muspratt Williams (1802-1832), who left England for India to undertake missionary work in 1829, dying in Chennai three years later.

Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, spine divided by raised bands gilt between double gilt rules, red morocco label, marbled edges and endpapers. Boards a little rubbed. Ink ownership inscription to title-page. An attractively-bound, handsome edition of Stewart’s magnum opus, first published in 1792. Stewart produced two accompanying volumes over the next 35 years but the first part was clearly considered to stand on its own as evidenced by this reprint.

Modern quarter tan calf, marbled boards, red morocco label, spine divided by double blind rules, other compartments tooled in blind to centre, marbled edges. A little light spotting. The second edition of Mill’s economic text, following the first two years earlier. A Scot by birth, James Mill (1773-1836) moved to London as a young man and published his History of British India in three volumes in 1818. His thoughts on politics and economics were influenced by his friendships with Jeremy Bentham and David Ricardo, and the book owes its existence to the notes taken by Mill’s son, the philosopher John Stuart Mill (1806-1873), as its genesis lies in the elder Mill’s lessons. Original black boards, spine blocked in gilt, silver dustjacket printed in black with colour illustration to front panel. Edges just very slightly bumped. Signed by the author on the title-page. A substantial collection of short stories in a variety of genres, signed by the author.

Poor-quality paper toned and foxed. Binding rubbed and worn at extremities, front joint cracking but sound, half of front flyleaf torn away. Portion of a (prize?) inscription on remains of flyleaf, dated 1842. A very rare German schoolbook for students of English, containing an English-language selective abridgement from Hume's History of England, followed by almost 75 pages of English-German vocabulary. It is entirely unknown to Library Hub, while OCLC shows a listing for the edition but no holdings.

York: Printed for Thomas Wilson and Sons., 1822. 12mo, pp. xxxvi, 372. Contemporary calf, spine divided by double gilt rules and lettered direct in gilt, edges sprinkled red. A little rubbed, front joint splitting but cords holding. Armorial bookplate of the Coultharts of Coulthart to pastedown. Expatriate American Quaker Lindley Murray (1475-1826) settled in York in the 1780s and wrote a series of educational books with immediate success: The English Reader was first published in 1799, and by 1800 had been reprinted in London, New York, Philadelphia, and Dublin. This edition is scarce institutionally, with Library Hub recording York Minster only; Worldcat adds another 3, of which 2 are also in Yorkshire: York, Leeds, and far-flung New Brunswick.
