Description:
1848. Etching. 315mm by 255mm (platemark). George Cuitt (1779-1854) originated from Yorkshire but settled in Chester. He etched old buildings esp castles and abbeys in Yorkshire, Chester and North Wales. Cuitt studied Piranesi's etchings of Rome and it is clear how much his style is influenced by Piranesi in subject matter and with the ruins covered with thick vegetation. He etched several series of studies in the early 19th century. These were collected and published together under the title of 'Wanderings and Pencillings amongst the ruins of Olden Times' in 1848.

Description:
1814. Soft ground etching. 270mm by 200mm (platemark). Lord Charlemont was well known for his love of Classical art and culture and spent nine years on the Grand Tour in Italy, Greece, Turkey and Egypt. He returned to Dublin and employed the Scottish architect Sir William Chambers to remodel his main residence Marino House, to design his town house Charlemont House and the unique Neo-Classical garden pavilion building, the Casino at Marino. Dance was an architect, draughtsman and founder member of the Royal Academy. This portrait comes from a series of chalk portraits that he did of his friends, 72 of which were engraved and published (1808-1814) by Daniell who was an engraver as well as a reknown landscape painter.Some light scattered foxing.

1728. Copper-line engraving. 400mm by 270mm (platemark). Line engraving from 'Villas of the Ancients Illustrated' by Robert Castell, published in 1728. Castell's work, dedicated to Lord Burlington, has Pliny the younger's descriptions of his villas at Tusculum and Laurentum, as well as material by other authors on the siting of villas. The engravings inspired early 18th architects to build their own Neo-Classical villas. Slight mark from previous mount (outside the platemark).

1855. Mezzotint on steel. 185mm by 235mm (platemark) 290mm by 425mm (sheet). East Bergholt House was the birthplace of Constable. From 'English Landscape Scenery', 1855. John Constable RA was an English Romantic landscape painter. He believed that imagination and emotion were an important part of artistic expression and so incorporated these tenets into his lush, idyllic scenes. Beginning in 1829, Constable worked closely with David Lucas to produce the mezzotints as a general survey of his work. A couple of faint foxing spots and a small handling crease within the platemark.

Accompanied by the original descriptive text. Henry Charles Andrews was an English botanist, botanical artist and engraver. He lived in Knightsbridge and was married to the daughter of John Kennedy of Hammersmith, a nurseryman who assisted Andrews in the descriptions of the plants he illustrated. Andrews was not only the artist, but also engraver, colourist, and publisher in an era when most artists were only employed to draw plates. The 'Botanist's Repository' was his first publication, issued serially in London in ten volumes between 1797 and 1812. Creasing at far right edge. Title slightly trimmed at very bottom of the sheet.
