Oblong Octavo receipt (ca. 11 x 21cm). Early historically interesting billhead of California’s pioneer bookseller A. Roman & Co, returning an “imperfect” copy of one of the earliest Merriam-Webster dictionaries to publisher G & C Merriam (Merriam-Webster) in Springfield, Massachusetts. Dated 29 October 1867, the billhead charges $9.00 for “Websters Dictionary Imperfect Returned” and $2.00 for the “freight fuel” from San Francisco to Springfield. Importantly, the document also features Merriam’s later note about sending the damaged book to the company’s binder and the proprietor of Riverside Press, Henry Oscar Houghton (1823-1893), in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Fold marks, paper mildly age toned, but overall a very good pair of manuscript documents.Historically interesting content rich letter written by a British diplomat in the Kingdom of Siam to his father. The narration starts with a description of the arrival of the “Commissioner for the delimitation of the boundaries between Burmah and Siam” (the Convention between the Governor-General of India and the King of Siam, defining the boundary between Siam and the Burmese province of Tenasserim, treaty signed on February 8, 1868, and ratified on July 3 the same year): “…[the Commissioner] brought with him a letter from the Viceroy of India and this letter was received by the King, en grand audience, with all honours. Most likely the watercolour shows his first landing which took place on October 12, 1492 in San Salvador Island (Guanahani), now in the Bahamas archipelago.The entry in Columbus journal from the 12 October 1492 describes the natives: "Many of the men I have seen have scars on their bodies, and when I made signs to them to find out how this happened, they indicated that people from other nearby islands come to San Salvador to capture them; they defend themselves the best they can. Mild fold marks, otherwise a very good collection.An interesting collection of three letters about the supply of the 1995 British Kanchenjunga expedition with chronometers. Charles Evans, the expedition leader, writes to L.C. Baume, the head of the London branch of Baume & Mercier watchmaking company, saying that he had received Baume’s offer to supply the expedition with watches.
