Original red cloth spine, illustrated front board. The binding is a little rubbed, and the contents are tanned; overall, this book is in good condition. Text in French. Undated; with the print code 5-28 in the printer's colophon, suggesting a print code of 1928.

Paris: chez Jean du Bray, 1649. No edition stated. 8vo, engraved half-title, engraved title, 3pp advertissement, (3), 9pp Epistre, (2), 379pp, 4pp index. 30 text engravings (one for each fable). Full brown calf, blindstamped, brown title label with gilt titling. Binding a little rubbed, but still a very good copy. There are a small number of manuscript alterations to errors in the text that make it look as though this copy was used for correcting a new edition. This book would at one stage have been part of a larger work also including Aesop's fables; this particular copy only contains fables by Philelphe. A subsequent edition of this work (1659) seems only to contain 18 fables by Philelphe, with no illustrations of these 18 fables.

Original green cloth, gilt titling to the front board and the spine. The binding is a little blotchy, there is some foxing to the endpapers and the edges of the text block, and a gift inscription; overall, the book is in good plus condition. The dustwrapper and presentation box are both present with this copy, but both the box and the dustwrapper are in scruffy condition.

Binding rubbed, contents age-toned; overall a good copy. pp 33-40 are close-cropped with some loss of text at the bottom of the page. This copy lacks the title page, so the actual edition is unclear. The British Library Public Catalogue lists two 4to editions of this work, both dated 1676, printed in Paris and Rouen.

This copy was formerly in a reference library, with a blindstamp to the upper corner of the text pages and the mounts for the plates, the binding is a little rubbed, and there is some thumbing of the text pages. Nonetheless, the book is tightly bound and the plates are in very good condition, and this is a good plus copy overall.
