Some light spotting, upper blank margin of title-page excised. Binding rubbed and a little worn at extremities, front flyleaf excised. Ownership inscriptions dated 1799 and 1836 to front pastedown. A rare provincial printing of Gay’s fables - ESTC locates just three copies, BL, Oxford, and Cambridge. ESTC T13862.

Edinburgh: Published by William Paterson, 1878. NO. 157 OF 250 COPIES, SIGNED BY THE PUBLISHER, folio, pp. [ii], 21, [1] + colour title-page and 144 colour plates. Original cream cloth, front board blocked with heraldic design in red and gilt, spine lettered in gilt. Boards somewhat soiiled and marked, spine-ends bumped, front hinge cracked. Binder’s ticket of Robert Seton, Edinburgh to rear pastedown.

London: David Nutt, 1897. FIRST EDITION, small 4to, pp. viii, 303, [1], 12 [ads]. Numerous full-page illustrations included within pagination. Original pale blue cloth, boards decorated in red, blue and orange, front board lettered direct in gilt, spine decorated in black. A little shaken, some light soiling. Spine sunned, some wear to extremities, particularly spine-ends, decoration a little rubbed, rear hinge reinforced with archival tissue. Gift inscription to flyleaf: ‘Irene Napier Bradley Jones with loving wishes from Auntie Jessie, February 28th 1899’. The first edition of this collection of folktales from Norwegian writer and folklorist Peter Christen Asbjørnsen (1812-1885).

London: Printed for Vernor And Hood, 1801. 8vo, pp. [iv], xxxii, 128 + frontispiece and 5 woodcut plates. Contemporary mottled calf. Slightly spotted, some offsetting from plates. Rebacked, red leather label, hinges relined, old leather crackled to edges. An early reprint, the first edition being 1800. The plates and vignettes, traditionally attributed to Bewick, are in fact by John Anderson (1775-1808), who had been apprenticed to Bewick before being transported to Australia, where he died in ignominy at a young age.

Oxford: Printed for J. and J. Fletcher, 1772. 8vo, pp. viii, 180. Later half dark blue calf, marbled boards, spine divided by double gilt rules, green morocco label, edges sprinkled red. First and last leaves damp-marked to margins and lightly toned. Binding a little rubbed, spine dulled. Ownership inscription of Northcomb to title-page. An anonymous rhyming translation of the first of Macpherson’s Ossian poems, which was first published in Macpherson’s blank verse in 1762. A version in ‘English Heroic Verse’ by Islay clergyman John Wodrow had appeared in an Edinburgh printing in 1771 but this is a different translation, one which was popular enough at least to reach a second edition in 1777. Signed by MacDiarmid to the limitation-page. Two 1930s poems - ‘By Wauchopeside’ and ‘The Diamond Body’ - in a later limited printing. The limitation page states 350 numbered copies of which the first 50 are signed, this copy designated ‘extra’ and neatly signed beneath.

Wrappers chipped to edges and lightly soiled. A selection of work from John Sheffield, Duke of Buckingham (1648-1721) printed by Bache Matthews ‘for my friends’ and with space for a named inscription, although this one is blank.

Ownership inscription dated May 1916 of ‘H. Henderson “Bard o’Reay” and “the poet of the north”’, ‘presentation copy’ embossment to title-page. An unpleasant copy, but the scarce first edition of Radclyffe Hall’s (1880-1943) sixth book of poetry. Front pastedown excised, rear pastedown lifting, a little worn and marked. Pencil notes to rear flyleaf. A very presentable copy in boards of this legal reference; its first edition was 1784 and it was revised again in 1790. ESTC T132098.

Contemporary half calf, grey paper boards, spine divided by gilt rules, stamped in blind, lettered and numbered 40-42 in gilt. A touch of spotting, tear to one leaf in volume one. Hinges reglued, small repairs to spine ends, a little bruised and worn at extremities. Bookplate of James Ball and unrelated ink ownership inscriptions to front pastedowns.
