Description:
London: Duckworth/ The Greenleaf Studio, 1922. Illustrated wrappers. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR-ILLUSTRATOR. 8vo, pp. 52, incl. 160 b/w illustrations by Smedley. Publisher's original illustrated buff wrappers, lettered in black, stapled beneath wrappers. Scarce initialled presentation from the author: "To Rosalind, who is so near Arden, from someone who likes her very much, C.S. 1933." Some nicking, browning and rubbing to wrappers, heel of spine lifting, corners rounded. Else, clean and bright. Very good A aptly inscribed copy of an unusual and fragile Smedley title, illustrated throughout by a black and white cartoon frieze header, suggesting the position and movement of actors. Birmingham-born, (Anne) Constance Smedley (1876-1941) was an artist and author, a New Woman and founder, in 1903, of the International Lyceum Clubs for Women Artists and Writers. With pan-European, democratic and non-hierarchic aspirations, she helped women to open clubhouses in Amsterdam, Berlin,…

Illustrated endpapers. Pushing to spine ends, lightest wear to extremities. Edges toned, top edge spotted. Ink offsetting to frontis tissue guard. Else, clean and tidy. Very good. A pleasing copy that speaks to an otherwise unrecorded meeting of two quite different literary celebrities, who both mined (or fabricated) their own lives for their works. Brittain likely visited New Orleans, and met Saxon, during her second American lecture tour (of three), undertaken between…

Description:
London: Faber and Faber, 1932. Cloth. Good-only. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. 8vo, pp. 352. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Shaken, binding slack, but holding, spine sunned, joints splitting, especially rear, corners bumped. Some foxing, inscribed by Farjeon in publication year in sepia pen to ffep: "Dear Maggie/ from Eleanor & Pod/ May 1932" and in another hand below: "Bertha Hagart/ July 1956". Else, clean. Good-only. It seems likely that Bertha Hagart (later Rose) was the Royal Academy of Music (RAM)-trained, South African pianist, who was active professionally both in South Africa and Britain in the 1950s. If this is the case, it also seems probable that Hagart and Farjeon met through the author's elder brother Harry, who taught at RAM for 45 years. Pod was Farjeon's partner and friend, George Earle; Maggie, sadly, remains unidentified.

Riant Chateau, Territet, Switzerland: POOL, 1929. Cloth. Good+. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, incl. b/w frontis and 22 b/w plates. Original red cloth, lettered in gilt. Spine and upper board sunned, extremities bruised, 1cm tear and small loss to tail of spine. Edges toned. Small ink smudges to p. 23 and adjacent plate, spine starting at p. 113, else, clean and tidy. A good copy of a colourful early account of the influential interwar cinema of Russia. In Film Problems, Bryher argued vociferously for the socio-political and aesthetic importance of Soviet Cinema and her right "as a freeborn English woman" to watch it; she sought a middle-way to discuss 'Russian film art,' for "either, it appears, you must be prepared to bayonet your aunt because she won't read Karl Marx, or else you must leave the room because Potemkin is mentioned" (p.11). Brim-full of striking stills selected by Kenneth Macpherson it is both a scathing indictment of British film censorship and a concerted attempt to circumvent it.…
