Digital print on archival glossy paper, format Super A3 305 x 405 mm, scanned from the original negative, signed and captioned in lower margin by the photographer, Geoffrey Hales. A striking shot taken outside the legendary Japanese fashion designer Kenzo Takeda's boutique at 28 passage Choiseul, Paris, in late 1970. Danish model Ingelil models one of Kenzo's 'ribbon dresses'. This garment was one of Kenzo's earliest Parisian creations, as his first shop in the rue Vivienne had opened just a few months earlier. During 1970-71 Kenzo commissioned his Paris neighbour, Melbourne-born musician, artist and photographer Geoffrey Hales, to photograph his designs. The print we offer here is taken from Geoffrey Hales' archive of original negatives from this period.

Albumen print photograph, 140 x 205 mm, laid down on its original board mount, 210 x 265 mm, verso with studio wet stamp of 'Lassetter & Coy. Limited, Sydney'; the print is in good condition, with sharp detail; the borders of the mount are heavily foxed. The Ceres, or Wheat Arch in Bridge Street, was one of several thematic arches erected around the centre of Sydney as part of the celebrations to mark the Federation of the Commonwealth of Australia in January, 1901. The following report by a Melbourne journalist in Sydney was published in The Argus on 1 January, 1901: 'Sydney is boiling and bubbling physically and mentally to-day. The last trains are emptying their loads at Redfern, and the last touches are being added to the decorative designs on every building, both public and private, while the streaming heat prevades everything until the scene is at once both an inspiring and it perspiring one. The old century, indeed, in this part of the world resembles the fabled Phoenix. Melbourne : Sands & McDougall Limited, 1901. Chromolithographed invitation card, 256 x 307 mm, the design incorporating a view of the Melbourne Exhibition Building set within a border of vignette illustrations in cartouches (Australian capital cities, state emblems, and portraits of the Duke and Duchess of York, who opened the first Federal Parliament at the Exhibition Building on 9 May, 1901); the names of the invitees are entered in manuscript in a calligraphic hand; a fine example.  

Melbourne : Women in the Visual Arts Collective, [October, 1976]. (First issue of this periodical). Quarto, original stiff wrappers covered in pink silk and printed in pink (a little marked); pp 44, b/w illustrations, lacking the double-page removable foldout with white doyly by artist Frances Phoenix (Budden) at centre, a good copy. 'Lip is a collective of feminists who represent a wide range of political, social and cultural stances' (p. 1) Lip was published in 8 issues from 1976 to 1984. The first number includes articles on writer Dorothy Hewett, silversmith Belinda Coulstock, Australian embroidery, and Australian feminist art, film and performing arts. Members of this Melbourne Collective at the time of the first number included Janine Burke, Mary Callaghan, Suzanne Davies, Folly Gleeson, Carolyn Howard, Christine Johnston, Sue Johnston, Pat Longmore, Suzanne Spunner, Ann Stephen, and Toni Wilkinson.

'Lip is a collective of feminists who represent a wide range of political, social and cultural stances' (p. 1) Lip was published in 8 issues from 1976 to 1984. This issue includes articles by Jeanette Fenelon, Judith McKay, Punch Hawkes, Carolyn Lewens, Freda Freiberg and others.  

Suva : [Methodist Mission Press], 1912. Twelve bound issues: nos. 73-84, January - December, 1912. Small quarto, contemporary cloth backed marbled papered card (rubbed), front hinge weakened, pastedowns marked, pp 1-144, all issues complete, each featuring a pictorial masthead and head- and tailpieces with traditional designs; flecking to top and fore-edges, otherwise very clean. Text in Fijian. A complete run of issues of the Fijian Methodist Mission's monthly newspaper for the year 1912. Copies of these issues are held in two Australian collections (State Library of New South Wales; University of Sydney Library).

Albumen print photograph,150 x 210 mm, numbered and captioned in negative 2505. Labour men - Rewa River - Fiji, laid down on original board mount with photographer's imprint of Burton, Dunedin at lower right and printed title The Camera in the Coral Islands at lower left, foxing along right hand edge of mount (not affecting image), otherwise a strong print in very good condition. Taken in mid-1884 during the second trip of the Wairarapa to the South Seas by the New Zealand photographer Alfred Henry Burton, this photograph featured as No. 2505 in the Burton Brothers catalogue of photographs from their trips to the Fijian Islands, Tonga, and Samoa, A camera in the Coral Islands (1884). 

Printing-out-paper print photograph, 202 x 150 mm; inscribed in negative 'Protected / O. J. Le Faivre 19.11.06'; verso with oval wet stamp worded 'More copies of this / Photo can be had from / Le Faivres Art Studioes [sic] / SUVA, FIJI'; superb clarity and tonal range; a couple of nicks to the left-hand edge and a few small tiny marks at upper left, else in very good condition (unmounted). Cannibal Tom (real name unknown) was a popular subject for photographers and postcard publishers, who often described him in their captions with the epithet ""last of the cannibals"" or similar. In this image he is posed in front of Suva photographer Le Faivre's suitably exotic painted backdrop, holding a club of the spurred or gunstock type, nggata. He is wearing an elaborate human hair wig, and a pendant cowrie shell ornament.

Manuscript letter in ink on laid paper, one page quarto, with a conjugate leaf with address panel and red wax seal; dated at 'Newgate, 9th May 1787', signed 'Thos. Baker', and addressed to 'Right Honble. Lord Sydney, Secretary of State'; the letter is written in a fine hand, apparently by a scrivener on the prisoner's behalf (see below); old folds, conjugate leaf with small marginal loss where the seal was broken; a very well preserved document. A rare example of a First Fleet convict letter. At the Exeter Quarter Sessions on 10 January 1786, Thomas Baker - no occupation recorded - was found guilty of a felony and sentenced to transportation for seven years. He was initially held on the prison hulk Dunkirk at Plymouth, where a report from the superintendent described him as 'troublesome at times'. He was later transferred to Newgate, before being delivered to the convict transport Charlotte on 11 March 1787. Includes the first Sonnet titled 'On the ships sailing for Botany Bay', a poetic version of the voyage of the First Fleet in 1787-88, with passing references to the Aboriginal population, as the fleet sails to '... new isles, where nature's children stray, arts yet untaught, and fruits unknown convey?'. IN: L'ami de la maison, Paris : Paulin et Le Chevalier, vol. 1 no 11, March 20 1856, pp161-67 and vol. 1 no. 12, March 27 1856, pp177-82, each part with 3 engraved illustrations; contained within a bound volume of nos. 1-25 (the complete first volume), January-June 1856, quarto, contemporary quarter calf over marbled papered boards (rubbed), spine with gilt lettering and rule, pp 1-404 (last 2 leaves with staining and loss), illustrated, scattered foxing. The legend of Fisher's Ghost is based on a true story, the murder of Frederick Fisher by George Worrell in western Sydney in 1827. Worrell was hanged for the crime. The introduction of Fisher's ghost into the narrative - a plot device which transforms the story into a successful work of fiction - is first evidenced in 1832, when an anonymous version of the story in verse form appeared in the Sydney journal Hill's Life, under the title The sprite of the creek. Single sheet, folded into 4 pp, octavo, letterpress, printed on one side only, illustrated with the Society's crest, 'Dear Sir and Brother, You are hereby informed that by the Cash Book you are in arrear to the Court of £ :, and unless the same, or some part thereof, is paid on next Court night you will officially become unfinancial. I am, dear Sir and Brother, Yours fraternally, ... Secretary, 18..', in good condition.

Single sheet (250 x 270 mm), folded vertically, the blindstamped initials 'J.A.' impressed into the paper, with a short message written in ink in the hand of Arago's secretary (Arago had lost his sight in 1837), signed in pencil in the frail hand of the aged Arago himself and dated 9 October 1853. The letter is addressed to 'The editorship of the Press' (publication unknown), thanking them on behalf of his family for their condolences on the death of his brother, the mathematician, astronomer and politician François Arago. Jacques Arago sailed with Freycinet on his 1817 voyage in the Uranie, and later wrote and illustrated the chronicle of the expedition in Promenade autour du monde (1822). Original correspondence from this important figure is scarce.

New York : F. Schumacher & Co., 1928. Quarto, illustrated wrappers (lightly marked), pp. 32, illustrated in colour and black and white. Fabrics from the art deco era presented for the modern woman by Schumacher fabrics.

Sydney : The Bulletin Newspaper Company, Ltd., 1898. Octavo, gilt-lettered green cloth (spine sunned), bookseller's blindstamp for Rigby of Adelaide to front free endpaper, pp. viii; 168, top edges gilt, others uncut, ribbon marker, a couple of gatherings starting to loosen, a few very minor spots of foxing, else very good. The author's first book of verse. 'Collected from Australian newspapers of the preceding five years, a selection of poems within the book entitled Fair girls and gray horses was published by The Bulletin Newspapers in November 1898 and was well received as 'the most charming book of Australian verse that has yet appeared'. The book was reprinted four times by 1901 due to demand. Subsequent editions contained varying numbers of poems, and in different orders (for example the 1905 edition at fourteen thousand impressions had 95 poems and a photograph of a young Will sitting with his arms crossed, while the 1930 edition of nineteen thousand impressions had 84 poems and a photograph… Read More
