New York: William A. Mercein, 1834. 84 pp. Removed from a bound volume and trimmed when bound. Inscribed by the author. Buchanan (1772-1851), born in Ireland, was a landed gentleman, entrepreneur, lawyer, and diplomat who spent his later life in New York and Canada. In 1816, as Her Majesty's Consul in New York, he worked to funnel British immigrants to Canada. He provides a plan to move 1000 emigrants a year through a Canadian depot where they would train for life in rural Canada. The title offered here discusses the problem of the poor and the criminal classes in England and America.

Maria Foote (1797-1867) was a well regard actress in London who at the age of 17 entered into a relationship with William Berkeley who promised to marry her. Over several years the couple had 2 children and eventually Foote realized he would not marry her. Joseph Hayne then began courting Foote but kept not showing up to several planned weddings. Foote sued for breach of promise and won. She continued her carrier and married in her mid-30's and had two more children.

The billhead is for Edward Schelmerdine's hat manufactory located at 159 Chestnut St, in Philadelphia The invoice is for 3 purchases of Beaver hats during the year of 1830. Schelmerdine arrived in Philadelphia from England in 1807. He was an active member of the Franklin Institute.
