First edition of the scarce short satirical play devoted to mocking David Garrick, perhaps the most famous actor of his day, who held the three-day, quasi-religious/nationalist Stratford Jubilee celebrating Shakespeare, which contemporaries largely panned, but was later widely credited as being a key moment in Stratford's history, developing it into a tourist destination. 8vo. A scarce advertising booklet filled with outlandish testimonials and even cartoons with rhyming captions. 32pp. in publisher's pictorial wraps. Worldcat locates 6 copies. Perhaps little more than snake oil, The Wood Library Museum of Anesthesiology, describes the product as "a turpentine-ether-alcohol tincture" and gives the percentage of aconite at 2%. About very good, in publisher's cloth-backed boards, which are rubbed, spine professionally repaired, front free endpaper renewed, title verso soiled, housed in custom chemise and case.. First edition of De Quincey's only original novel, in publisher's boards, a work in the spirit of the gothic novels he consumed as a child (he referred to Ann Radcliffe as "the great enchantress"), featuring a masquerade, murders, and the Thirty Years' War. While largely neglected at present, the novel had numerous notable admirers at release "[Coleridge], Emily Dickinson, Nathaniel Hawthorne and John Addington Symonds were among several others who expressed interest in the novel" Morrison, introduction to Klosterheim (2001). 8vo.
