Limited edition of 400, this being No. 174. An illustrated biography of Scottish artist George Manson (1850-1876), whose short life restricted his output but upon the evidence presented in this work, he would have become one of Scotland's premier late 19th century artists. His paintings rarely appear on the market and do not fetch much when they do. One to keep an eye out for.

Very Good. 8vo, pp. I, xxviii, 376, II, xi, 543, original bevelled green boards with gilt lettering, bright but some rubbing (possibly mild insect damage), interiors with owner's signature to back of the ffep, some pencil marginalia, otherwise crisp and clean, a few partially uncut pages have been opened using a letter opener but not disastrously so, binding tight. Sir Henry Howorth was a conservative M.P. and amateur geologist. He was controversially made a fellow of the Royal Society despite his lack of any formal training. The Glacial Nightmare and the Flood was an attempt to disparage Lyall's theory of ice ages having helped form the landscape and puts forward a theory that floodwaters were the culprits.
