1795. Line engraving. 455mm by 350mm (platemark). Depicts Galileo seated in a chair holding a telescope gazing toward the viewer. Galileo Galilei (1564- 1642) was an Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher who played a major role in the Scientific Revolution. His achievements include improvements to the telescope and consequent astronomical observations and support for Copernicanism. Platemark intact. Small margins.

Some faint off-setting. A couple of marks in lower right corner of the sheet.

1848. Etching. 255mm by 315mm (platemark). Lettered below the image with the title, and 'Drawn and Etched by G Cuitt, Chester, 1812'. Lettered 'Plate 63' top right. From 'Wanderings and Pencillings amongst the ruins of Olden Times', 1848, a compilation of Cuitt's etchings from the early 19th century. Cuitt was a draughtsman and etcher of old buildings especially castles and abbeys in Yorkshire, Chester and North Wales. He studied Piranesi's etchings of Rome and it is clear how much his style is influenced by Piranesi in subject matter and in the manner the ruins are covered with thick vegetation.

1921. Pochoir. 245mm by 185mm (sheet). La Chambre Nuptiale ou La nourrice Attentionnee deshabille pour le soir..." Pierre Brissaud was a French Art Deco illustrator, painter and engraver. He was born in Paris, France and trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Atelier Fernand Cormon in Montmartre, Paris. He is known for his pochoir (stencil) prints for the fashion magazine Gazette du Bon Ton published by Lucien Vogel, Paris. Many of his illustrations are realistic leisure scenes of the well-to-do. They illustrate the designs of Paris fashion houses such as Jeanne Lanvin, Cheruit, Worth, and Doucet.

He etched many Australian buildings, esp schools after the Collegiate Etching and Fine Arts Studio began to sell etchings of schools.CONDITION : Toning in the thin margins. Laid down onto card. Break in paper bottom right corner just outside image area.

1885. Tinted lithograph. 265mm by 205mm (sheet). James Laidley (1786-1835) arrived in Sydney in 1827 to become New South Wales Commissary General. He was also a foundation member of the Australian Racing Club in 1828. Laidley's Plains in Queensland was named in his honour by the botanist Allan Cunningham.
