London: Published by R. Cocks and Co., 1835. FIRST EDITION, 12mo, pp. viii, 64, 40, 6 [ads]. Original patterned brown cloth, printed paper label to front board, edges sprinkled red. Some scattered toning. Boards stained, worn to extremities, particularly foot of spine, stitching strained in places, label soiled. Contemporary ownership inscription of E. Stich and pencil inscription dated 6-1-83 to pastedown, modern bookplate to flyleaf. Not a lovely copy, but the first edition in its original binding of this primer for composers, that was revised and expanded several times throughout the nineteenth century, reaching a 17th printing and third edition by 1842. Library Hub records 4 copies of this first, with some of them having a larger catalogue of ads to the rear, although this example is complete as issued.

Original quarter white cloth, orange paper boards, front board blocked in white, spine lettered in orange, cream dustjacket printed in brown. A little spotting. Dustjacket a little marked, spine panel toned and chipped at ends, one or two tiny edge tears. Bookplate to pastedown reading ‘Justitia Facitur Bonum’. With the imprint of Andrew Dakers pasted over that of The Moray Press on the title-page.

Andoversford: The Whittington Press, 1976. ONE OF 400 COPIES, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, 4to, pp. [viii], 35, [3]. Original quarter black cloth, marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, original black slipcase. A few faint marks to slipcase and binding, else fine. The signed and limited edition of one of J.B. Priestley’s (1894-1984) final works of prose, differentiating and exploring the various types of dreams.

London: Granta Books in association with Penguin Books, 1990. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. 218. Original black cloth, spine lettered in silver, colour-printed dustjacket, blue endpapers. A fine copy. The fifth book and first work of children’s literature by Salman Rushdie.

London: Printed for J. Walker, 1795. 2 vols. bound as 1, 8vo, pp. 146; 124 + 7 plates. Contemporary marbled calf, spine divided by gilt rolls, red morocco label. A touch of rubbing to extremities. Contemporary ownership inscription of Edw. Emerson to flyleaf. An attractive copy of these scarce parts of a reissue by Walker of Harrison’s Classicks, a series reprinting periodicals in cheaper double-column format. The volumes, sold initially in parts, were all available separately; this one contains the Idler (Birmingham, BL, & 5 in USA/Australia in ESTC) and William Melmoth’s ‘Letters of Sir Thomas Fitzosborne’ (BL, Columbia, Catholic Institute of Sydney).

London: Hamish Hamilton, 1985. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, 8vo, pp.[vi], 217, [1]. Original brown buckram, spine lettered in gilt, colour-printed dustjacket. A little toned. Blue offsetting to endpapers and front dustjacket flap from paper bag, now removed. Ackroyd’s postmodern occult detective story was winner of Best Novel at the 1985 Whitbread Book Awards. This first printing is signed and dated to the title-page, Edinburgh, September 5 1990.

Edinburgh: Printed in the Year, 1765. 8vo, pp. 16. Later plain paper wrappers, blue cloth spine. A little light spotting, title page and wrapper lightly soiled, wrappers chipped to top edge. A reasonably scarce pamphlet, with ESTC listing 8 copies, evenly split between Britain and North America. It proposes an amendment to the inheritance law of Scotland, with particular reference to the Entail Act 1685, a much-amended act which ‘related to a subject which affected very materially the welfare not only of landowners, but of tenants, and the public generally in Scotland’ according to Lord Advocate Edward Gordon, seeking a further amendment in 1875. The Entail Act was finally repealed in 2004.

London: Printed by B. Howlett, 1814. SOLE EDITION, 18mo, pp. [ii], 33, [1]. Contemporary straight-grained black roan, boards bordered with a double gilt rule, spine lettered vertically in gilt, pink endpapers, edges gilt. Rubbed, a few small scratches. Bookplate of Walter Flinn to pastedown, earlier gift inscription 'Mandeville from E. Montagu' to flyleaf, two errors corrected in manuscript. A scarce verse chronicle covering in its short length the 24th century to c. 315 BCE, with the dates of events and people helpfully indicated intralinearly in the text. The author, Hudson Gurney (1775-1864), owned a notable library and several of his verse publications had a historical bent. Firstsearch and Library Hub locate half a dozen copies in the UK (BL, Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, Birmingham, East Anglia) and four in the USA (NYPL, SUNY, Cal State, and Missouri).

Montreal: First Statement, 1945. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. [44]. Original stapled buff card wrappers, grey paper dustjacket printed in black and red. A few faint marks. Dampmark along foot of spine, dustjacket faded to extremities. Drafted two-page letter to author loosely inserted. The first edition of the first collection by Canadian poet Irving Layton (1912-2006). It was the initial publication of a series supplementing First Statement Magazine which promoted young Canadian writers.

Edinburgh: Thomas Clark, 1830. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. 40. Disbound. A touch of spotting. Ownership inscription of Sir J. J. Forbes to title-page. The scarce first edition of a short but important work by the superintendent of the Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh, a post for which M’Nab had been headhunted from the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Outside of Scotland Library Hub locates two copies of this edition (at Kew and RHS) and one copy of the 1831 second edition (BL); the NLS holds both while Aberdeen, St Andrews, and Edinburgh have firsts only and Glasgow a second only. Worldcat adds first editions in Harvard, NYPL and Botanical Garden, Guelph, and NLI, with the second in Wageningen, Delaware, and Yale.

Paris: Chez les Editeurs J.B. Gail... et P.F. Aubin, 1795. FIRST EDITION, 4 vols, 8vo, pp. [iv], xxxviii, 374, [2] + frontispece; [iv], 363, [3]; [iv], 333, [1]; [iv], 337, [3]. Contemporary half sheep, sprinkled beige paper boards, spines divided by gilt rules, tan and olive textured paper labels. A few minor spots. Extremities slightly rubbed, corners of a couple of labels chipped. The first appearance of this significant translation, the only 18th-century French text of Thucydides and the most authoritative modern translation since Hobbes’s English version of 1629. Lévesque, a historian of Russia and France, finds in the ancient source vital lessons for France, then in the midst of the Revolution, and his preface argues for Thucydides as the most political of historians and a source of practical advice for contemporary readers.

Original apricot boards, front board and spine lettered in brown, inset illustration to front board, illustrated endpapers, original dustjacket printed in green, blue, and brown. Somewhat dustsoiled, dustjacket with small tears and chips, sellotape residue to one internally, front flap corner clipped. A wartime reprint of the French edition of Jeremy Fisher, dated based on the publisher’s code to the verso of the title-page.

Contemporary sprinkled calf, spines divided by raised bands, red and blue morocco labels, other compartments bordered with triple gilt rules enclosing central flower tools. Some browning and spotting. Joints rubbed, a few spine ends worn, several labels lost or partially defective. First published in Paris in quarto in 1730, this is an Amsterdam reprint, produced around the same time as the second Paris edition, also in this smaller format.

Edinburgi [Edinburgh]: Apud Robertum Freebarnium, 1732. 12mo, pp. 298. Contemporary sheep, boards bordered with a blind roll. Poor-quality paper rather browned, a wormtrail to upper margin of first 10 leaves - shrinking to a hole through next 10 leaves - causing loss of one or two characters per page. Binding rubbed at joints and edges, second front flyleaf excised, hinges cracked but strong. A scarce little printing (5 locations in ESTC: Aberdeen, NLS, BL, Bod, plus the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin) of Quintus Curtius Rufus’s history of Alexander the Great by the royal printer in Edinburgh, Robert Freebairn. It was produced towards the end of Freebairn’s career - he was declared bankrupt in 1736 - and the small size and poor-quality paper suggest it was intended for schools or similar ephemeral existence under hard use. London: Printed for T. Payne and Son [et al], 1790. 3 vols., 8vo, pp. [iv], xxxix, [i], 512; xxxii, 492; xxx, 308, vi, 71, [47] + engraved dedication leaf in vol. 1. Near-contemporary tree calf, red morocco labels, spines tooled in gilt, edges yellow. Just a touch of spotting. Somewhat rubbed and worn, joints cracked, label to vol. 1 lost. Armorial bookplates of Cranstoun of Corehouse to pastedowns. The first edition of the first English translation of the major work of J.S. Pütter (1725-1807), long-serving professor of law at Göttingen. The translator, Josiah Dornford (1762-1797), was an Oxford graduate who took his LLD at Göttingen, though he was also called to the bar at Lincoln’s Inn. This copy belonged to George Cranstoun, Lord Corehouse (1770-1850), advocate and judge, close friend of Walter Scott and esteemed by Lord Monboddo as the ‘only scholar in all Scotland.’ ESTC T144586.

London: Printed for W. Innys and R. Manby, 1737. 8vo, pp. [vi], vi, [iv], 365, [3, ads]. Contemporary sprinkled calf, ruled in gilt. Lightly toned and spotted. Rubbed, joints cracked but firm, a bit of wear to extremities, label lost from spine. The primary work of literary criticism by the somewhat obscure figure of the Rev. Edward Manwaring, whose other titles were mostly concerned with ancient prosody. ESTC T123010.

Lancaster: Printed and Published by C. Clark, 1807. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. vii, [i], 118, [4], 119-128, [6] + folding map frontispiece and 3 plates, of which 2 folding. Untrimmed and sewn on cords, loosely inserted in a case of modern half leather over card boards. Some spotting, a little offsetting from plates. 2 inscriptions to flyleaf: ‘The Late Matthew Gregson’s Copy with MS notes,’ and ‘From The Library of the Late Rev. Tho. Corser, M.A., F.A.S. Stand Rectory Manchester’; ink notes to blank leaf to rear. A Frankenstein edition of a Lancaster guidebook, partially-bound and with notes attributed the author of an important history of the area. Dublin: Printed for P. Byrne, 1796. 8vo, pp. [xliv], 227, [17]. Contemporary calf, spine divided by raised bands, red morocco label, other compartments tooled centrally in black. Some scattered toning and spotting, one opening soiled. Joints sometime repaired, boards somewhat rubbed and marked and a touch worn, spine dry and a little crackled. A few marginal pencil marks. An Irish printing of barrister Charles Barton’s (1768-1843) first book, first published in London in the same year. ‘This short work aimed to be a scientific deduction of the proceedings used on the equity side of the courts of exchequer and chancery, tracing each of the steps from the institution of a suit to a decree’ (ODNB). This Hibernian issue is scarcer than the London printing, particularly on this side of the Atlantic - ESTC records 12 copies, all of them in North America. ESTC N3697.
