Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh's visit of 1867-68 was the first to the Australian colonies by a member of the royal family, a momentous event which created enormous public interest. In March 1868 he would survive an assassination attempt at Clontarf, Sydney, when he was shot in the back by an Irish nationalist, Henry James O'Farrell. The following report of the royal visit to The Band of Hope mine was published in the Melbourne newspaper The Australasian on 14 December, 1867: 'It was not to be expected that the Duke would visit Ballarat without going to see… Read More

Description:
New York : Atlas Mills, 200 Madison Ave., 1929. Small folio portfolio (305 x 230 mm), original cloth backed textured papered boards (faded and scuffed), housing two sample cards (by Chas. Green Co., New York) with a total of 72 vibrantly coloured silks; a few pencilled annotations (presumably made by a sales representative) and some minor handling marks to the edges of the cards, otherwise in fine condition - a simply dazzling array of haute couture silk samples with colours across the entire palette. Atlas Mills employed a talented wordsmith to come up with a set of names for the colours of their Fall 1929 silk range. From the noble and classic (Jeanne D'Arc; Ondine; Castillian; Dauphine Blue; Nile) to the romantic, daring and exotic (Pandora; Midnight; Brown Sugar; Maracaibo; Goya; Independence; Passion Flower), to the nonchalant and informal (Chin Chin; Brioche; Meadow Sweet; Mother Goose), and the apt and topical (Byrd Blue; Navigator; Pilot), they are all wonderfully evocative. The irony is, of… Read More

Hermannsburg, N.T. : Ntaria School, 2002. Large quarto (295 x 210 mm), pictorial stiff wrappers, stapled; pp 60, b/w photographic illustrations; text in English and Western Arrernte; a fine presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page for bibliophile and former Hermannsburg resident Charles Fletcher. Hermann Adolph Heinrich (1895-1959) arrived at the Hermannsburg Mission (Ntaria) in 1917, where he was to be the mission school teacher. This publication reproduces the text of six letters written in Western Arrernte (Arrarnta) which were sent to Heinrich in the mid 1930s by Ntaria residents after he and his family had departed Hermannsburg for Adelaide in 1932. The letters are accompanied by English translations. The introduction, written by Heinrich's daughter, Ilona Oppenheim, provides a historical context for the letters. Family trees of the Heinrich family and of the letter writers are also included. The original manuscript letters themselves are illustrated, along with a number of… Read More

Three sepia tone photographs on printing out paper with celluloid coating, each 200 x 150 mm, laid down on their original board mounts, versos of mounts with contemporary inscriptions in pencil: 'Bore at G. Ryder's paddock'; 'Bore at G. Ryder's new house'; 'Mountain bore (H. Ryder's)'; one of the prints with foxing, the mounts with residual glue marks and staining. Racing administrator, stud master and businessman George Edward Ryder (1905-1989) moved to Cessnock from Inverell in around 1928. He became one of the most prominent figures in Australian thoroughbred racing, both through his ownership of Woodlands and Kia Ora studs and through his 37 years of service on the board of the Sydney Turf Club, for which he served at various times as treasurer, vice-chairman and chairman. He was responsible for creating the Golden Slipper, the STC's most famous race. Randwick's George Ryder Stakes is named in his honour.

New York : Clarkson N. Potter, 1976. First edition. Oblong folio, spiral bound, cloth covered boards (short splits and cracking along spine, the laminate flaking), pp. xiii; 104; colour plates, glassine stencilled designs of interiors, internally clean, protected in a modern mylar jacket. A good copy of this classic guide to 1970s interior design. Gold's 'Instant decorator' would be the major source book for many paintings by Australian Howard Arkley. ""As noted under the main entry for 1992, the compositions of almost all the canvases in Arkley’s ‘Mix ’n Match’ show (Tolarno 10/92) were based on the US decorator book The Instant Decorator, by Frances Joslin Gold (New York: Clarkson N.Potter Inc., 1976), a reference source Arkley also used regularly during subsequent years. This book, given to Arkley by his colleague John Nixon, with the sarcastic comment that it would make Arkley’s fortune (quoted and discussed, Carnival 30-32), is extant, more or less intact, in the artist’s studio… Read More
