Edmonton, Alta: Grass Roots Press, 2010. First Edition. Softcover. New. Louise Penny is the best-selling (many times over) author of the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache literary mystery series. Her seventeen novels (thus far) have won numerous awards, and Penny has legions of fans. This novella, however, is a little known work of Penny's, written to benefit Canada's literacy programs. This is a quick read, written with all the beloved characters and in the Quebec settings of the series. And is it a trade paperback, not a mass-market paperback - larger, higher quality - making for a much nicer reading experience. New, unopened.

Bound in red leather and cloth, bearing a gilt Harvard seal on its front, gilt lettering and design on its spine, and gilt upper edges. Provides a description of the Harvard Prize Books award and an inscription from the Harvard Club of Andover to the winning student at The Johnson High School, dated 1947. The book itself is an autobiography by Ellery Sedgwick, a Harvard alumnus who was the editor of The Atlantic Monthly from 1908-1938. An interesting piece of history, both of the Harvard prize book tradition and of the 20th century literary world.

The selections are organized into helpful groupings and accompanied by contextual material by James E. Miller. Mostly known for low-budget Westerns and serials, Republic Pictures, active from 1935-1959, also made a lesser number of higher quality films. Written years after the studio's closing, this book recounts the Republic story by highlighting its films' leading ladies, including Barbara Stanwyck, Maureen O'Hara, Ethel Barrymore, and Rita Hayworth. As Thomas Burnett Swan writes in the introduction, "The Heroine or the Horse is a tribute to some of the finest actresses and greatest beauties of Hollywood; it is also, I hope, a partial but accurate history of the studio where they worked." The book features 130 black and white photos of the actresses and stills from the movies. A wonderful gift book for old movie buffs and fans of the golden age of Hollywood.

It features over 100 pages of herbs found in Hong Kong, and each page features a color illustration, and a description of the plant and its stem, leaves, flowers, and fruit. Designed for identifying plants encountered in Hong Kong, it includes such plants as Spurge, Blue Pig-Ear, and Gold Button, among many others. The names of the plants are also printed in Chinese.

We strongly recommend this cookbook - an IACP cookbook award winner that includes over 2,000 vegetarian recipes of every ilk. Mark Bittman's original How To Cook Everything was described by the Washington Post as "a more hip Joy of Cooking," and this offering is very much in the same vein. All recipes are vegetarian, but they are also appealing, with such dishes as Pearl Couscous Gratin with Pesto and Goat Cheese, Swiss-Style Cheese Bake, and Espresso Black Bean Chili. In addition to his skills in explaining basic techniques and 250 how-to illustrations, Bittman has also included other features such as menus for different occasions compiled from the book's recipes, informative charts on various ingredients, and variations accompanying each recipe.
