Nach seiner Assistentenzeit in Baltimore, 1894-95, trat er 1896 als Assistent in das Pharmakologische Institut in Straßburg (Schmiedeberg), habilitierte sich hier 1900 für Pharmakologie (1906 Tit. Prof.) und folgte 1907 dem Ruf als Ordinarius nach Würzburg. 1920 übersiedelte er in die Schweiz, wo er als Vorstand der Biologischen Abteilung der Gesellschaft für chemische Industrie (bis 1923) und als Dozent an der Basler Universität wirkte.
