Also laid in is a note from Swenson on a National Institute of Arts and Letters card relaying that the book is a joint gift from her and a mutual friend, who was the poet Ann Stanford. The recipient, Elizabeth Allen Straus, was a member of New York high society (the Straus's were Macy's Department Store heirs) and later a resident of Mt. Desert Island in Maine. She was a philanthropist and champion of the New York Botanical and the Museum of Modern Art.  Swenson is consider one the most important mid-century poets and was the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship among many other honors. Alexander is described as a "businessman-environmentalist," and here he takes a look at the problem of waste from the perspective of someone who has worked in the waste and recycling industries. The book starts with a historical view of garbage ("In the Beginning . . . There Was Garbage") and transitions to the dilemma of our contemporary "throwaway society." As the jacket says: "Alexander proposes that the problem does not necessarily lie with the quantity of our resources, population growth, affluence, or with space or pollution, but rather with politics, fear, and misinformation." A nice installment in any garbology or sustainability collection. An interesting association in that it speaks to Ehrlich's relative affluence and the lifestyle that she was perhaps escaping when she struck out for Wyoming where she wrote her classic The Solace of Open Spaces.
