First published in 1943, McHugh’s novel is an ebullient portrait of a New York City infected with a strange virus, which causes its inhabitants to be carefree and content to live the good life free of ambitions and schedules. Of course, the powers-that-be see a problem with this and seek to find a cure. Throughout the madcap adventure, McHugh describes the many landmarks that became icons of New York’s Golden Age.

By the commander of one of the five midget submarines that participated in the attack, who later became the first Japanese POWs of the war. First hand Japanese accounts of World War II in English are few, and this important source is quite rare in any condition. A previous owner’s name and some initials are written in ink on the front free endpaper; contents fine.

The contents are fine, with a former owner’s bookplate on the front pastedown.

A very good copy of the Second Printing of the First English edition, which the publisher designated as a “Second Edition” but which bibliographer Ronald Cohen argues is really more a second printing, with very modest changes made to the text and overall layout of the book. To the naked eye it appears identical to the First Edition, particularly in this attractive example, which is bright and tight, with rich red cloth and little perceptible spine fade. There is a hint of shelf wear and a few faint scuffs. The contents are fine and unfoxed.

Very Good. 10 7/8 x 8 1/4 inches (Two-sided paper leaflets). “What to do if fighting breaks out in my neighborhood.” The two most dire and immediate of all British World War II leaflets. Each was distributed to the citizenry of the British Isles in anticipation of a Nazi invasion; IF THE INVASION COMES in June 1940 and BEATING THE INVADER in May 1941. IF THE INVASION COMES contains no contribution from Winston Churchill but is rarely seen. BEATING THE INVADER, Churchill bibliographer Frederick Woods apparently believed, was entirely of Winston Churchill’s authorship, and so listed it as an A item.
