Description:
[Oxford:]: [Pembroke College], 1974. ONE OF 500 COPIES, 14 facsimile pamphlets in buff or marbled paper wrappers housed as issued in individual plastic bags and a leatherette slipcase. With ‘A Note on the Facsimiles’ loosely inserted. As new. A special production to commemorate 350 years since the founding of Pembroke College, Oxford. The original manuscripts of Johnson’s ‘Prayers and Meditations’ had been given to the Rev. George Strahan, son of Johnson’s main publisher, shortly before the author’s death; the resulting edition of 1785 was significantly edited, but the manuscripts passed to Strahan’s daughter and were given by her to Pembroke in the 1820s, enabling this fully faithful and unexpurgated reproduction at last some 150 years later.

Description:
London: Printed for Thomas Tegg, 1812. 12mo, pp. [iv], 284 + frontispiece. Gathering S misfolded and hence bound out of order. Modern quarter green calf, blue marbled boards, spine divided by raised bands, 2nd compartment lettered direct in gilt. Somewhat toned, frontispiece heavily so, lightly soiled, corners creased. One of numerous printings of a pocket or 'miniature' dictionary claiming descent from Johnson's magisterial work - though likely without any connection beyond his name and the visage on the frontispiece.

Description:
London: Printed for Thomas Tegg, 1813. 12mo, pp. 216 + hand-coloured frontispiece. Untrimmed in original cream boards printed in black. Offsetting from frontispiece to title-page. Boards soiled, extremities bumped, spine rubbed and defective to foot with glue repair to head. Despite the title-page this is the second edition of this parody of Rokeby, and the first edition with the coloured frontispiece. Per Todd and Bowden it was published on the 23rd of July, only six months after the first publication of Rokeby, and a month before the fifth edition of Scott’s own poem was published. Tegg may have been inspired by the original’s popularity to cheat his edition statement - but if he did so he was only following the lead of Ballantyne and Co., who had reissued the sheets for their second edition of Rokeby with a new title-page calling it the third edition some months earlier. Todd & Bowden 496S[2].

Description:
London: Printed for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell, 1775. FIRST EDITION, second printing, 8vo, pp. [iv], 384. Six-line errata leaf bound after title-page. Contemporary calf, spine divided by raised bands, red morocco label, other compartments with central gilt tools. Some spotting and toning, errata leaf trimmed at fore-margin. Rather rubbed, extremities a touch worn, joints cracked but cords holding. Early ownership inscription of John Jones of Trinity College, Oxford to flyleaf. Todd’s ‘B’ issue - technically really a second edition, as the text was significantly reset between the two printings - of Johnson’s famous early Scottish travel narrative, post-dating but far more influential than Pennant’s Tour in Scotland in 1769. Description:
London: Printed for D. Midwinter... and H. Clements, 1719. 12mo, pp. xxiv, 408. Title-page in red and black. Contemporary panelled sheep, spine divided by raised bands, red morocco label. Some browning and foxing. Rubbed, joints cracked but holding, a bit of wear to spine ends and corners. Armorial bookplate of Rolle to pastedown, ownership inscription dated 1724 partly erased from flyleaf. The slightly less scarce variant with shorter imprint - even so only located in a handful of British institutions by ESTC, plus another 8 in North America - of this translation of the epitome of the history of Gnaeus Trogus Pompeius by Marcus Junianus Justinus, first published in 1702. The translator was Thomas Brown (d.1704), a gifted linguist and prolific hack 'equally distinguished by ability and dissipation' (ODNB), perhaps now best remembered as the extemporiser of the epigram ‘I do not love thee Dr Fell’. ESTC T119470.
