Jonathan Cape, 1965. First edition, first printing. 8vo. Publisher's black boards with gilt titles & blind stamped bullet holes to front board. Pictorial dustwrapper by Jan Pienkowski in the manner of the of trompe l'oeil style created by Richard Chopping for the Bond titles. A fine copy with no marks to boards. No marks to clean textblock edges. No inscriptions. The near fine/fine dustwrapper is complete & remarkably fresh and clean with none of the usual heavy toning to the diamond white lettering on wrapper spine. A few small rubs here & there to print. Original price of 16snet to front flap. A very clean copy. A dossier compiled by Amis on the most famous spy in the world.

Provenance - attractive heraldic bookplate of Walter Russell, Baron Brain of Eynsham (medical statesman, poet & outstanding physician who made important contributions to neurological knowledge besides writing the standard British textbook on the subject) to front endpaper of vol i.
