AN OIL PORTRAIT OF A MAN WHO WENT WEST IN 1833 TO VISIT PAWNEE INDIANS[IRVING, Jr., John Treat (1812-1906), American author, lawyer, western traveler; Washington Irving's nephew]. [MORGAN, William Penn (1826-1900), Anglo-American painter]. A fine large oil portrait, 30 x 25, on canvas, expertly restored and relined, unframed. Painted in New York in 1868, when Irving was 55 years old. It is a half-lengthportrait showing its subject in formal attire.
Morgan was born in London in 1826, and early in life emigrated to the United States. He studied in Paris at the atelier of Thomas Couture, and at Le Harve. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York in 1851, and became an Associate Member in 1862; exhibiting 71 paintings at the National Gallery between 1861 and 1900. He is described in the Academy records "as a painter of 'sterling merit' whose treatment of subjects 'reflected the sensitiveness and refinement of his own nature.'"
