Jacob van Heemskerk (1567-1707) was a Dutch explorer and later admiral commanding the Dutch fleet at the Battle of Gibraltar. He believed that imagination and emotion were an important part of artistic expression and so incorporated these tenets into his lush, idyllic scenes. Beginning in 1829, Constable worked closely with David Lucas to produce the mezzotints as a general survey of his work.

A member of the Edinburgh Philosophical Society, Anderson was a prominent figure in the Scottish Enlightenment. He invented the Scotch plough. Some toning on left hand side outside the image area. Some scattered faint foxing.

James Barry RA (1741-1806) was an Irish painter, best remembered for his six-part series of paintings entitled The Progress of Human Culture in the Great Room of the Royal Society of Arts in London. Dance was an architect, draughtsman and founder member of the Royal Academy. This portrait comes from a series of chalk portraits that he did of his friends, 72 of which were engraved and published (1808-1814) by Daniell who was an engraver as well as a renown landscape painter. Accompanied by original descriptive text. Scattered foxing.

Inspired by antique art, he executed several large historical works in a neo-classical style and, from 1777 to 1783, he decorated the great room of the Society of Arts. Accompanied by original descriptive text. Library stamp on reverse.Trimmed just outside platemark on right hand side. Small waterstain to sheet outside the platemark.

1787. Copper-line engraving. 180mm by 110mm (platemark). James Boswell, 9th Laird of Auchinleck (1740 - 1795) was a lawyer, diarist, and author born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He is best known for the biography he wrote of one of his contemporaries, the English literary figure Samuel Johnson. One foxing spot in the title area.

Sims was the first chairman and vice-president of the Philanthropic Society; and was also involved in the Humane Society in it's early days.
