Off-white cotton with red and blue pictorial imprint and recto and blue pictorial imprint on verso. Light soiling and previous folds. No drawstring. Likely new old stock. Very Good Condition. A striking example of early 20th century typography with beautiful block cut image of a scene from a setting similar to Yosemite with a native American woman with bow and canoe on recto. Verso shows a less dramatic yet pleasing design of Alfarata Wheat. Flour sacks had to be durable with a tightly woven fabric for effective use, which made them popular, especially during the depression to be re-purposed as dresses, hand towels or tablecloths.

Emotional and somewhat nasty typed letter from Jack London's former friend Joseph Noel to London regarding the timing of the release of Sea Wolf as a silent movie in 1913. Jack London and Joseph Noel were close friends for many years and Joseph had the acquired all dramatic rights Sea Wolf. As Noel writes in this letter, "Previous to February 20, 1912, I held all the dramatic rights of the Sea Wolf. On that date you, under the cloak of friendship, took with a word the moving picture rights back. This letter is addressed simply, "Dear Judge," and though Kittredge inquires after the judge's wellbeing, a name is never mentioned. In the letter, Kittredge also talks about his wife and various matters with which he and the judge appear to both be involved, though the letter is somewhat difficult to decipher given that the ink bled through the thin paper on both sides. Memorial card is 1.75 x 3.25 inches edged in black. One of the rarest printed Jack London items, first published in 1899. This separate issue of 35 privately printed in 1932. BAL 11989. The memorial or mourning card includes a quote from George Gissing.

Two packing tape repairs (3,5 and 2 inch) inside back wrapper. Interior mostly clean. Very Good Condition. Beautiful 1903 Christmas Edition of the Illustrated London News containing multiple full-page Christmas sketches, a 2-page H.H. Flere centerfold, and a lengthy Jack London story, "The Faith of Men." This London story was the title story for his 1904 collection published by Macmillan. The Illustrated London News was known for their beautiful artwork, offering fine-art plates from the magazine for purchase.

Edited by Charles L. Camp. The definitive edition, 1450 copies. The adventures of a trapper and overland emigrant as told in his own reminiscences and diaries. "The author was one of the first white men to traverse South Pass and, in 1826, to circumnavigate the Great Salt Lake. His diaries cover the years 1844-47 and describe his adventures on the Oregon and the Oregon-California Trails, including the time spent in San Francisco in 1845. In 1848 he settled permanently in California, where he died at his Napa ranch in 1881.

Lithograph print on matboard; print very lightly toned to edges, could be hidden with frame; no creases or edge wear; very good condition. This print has a Dubuffet autograph to the bottom right corner; however, it appears to be printed, not an actual signature. Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) was a French painter and sculptor of the School of Paris. He embraced a "low art" aesthetic, favoring authenticity over traditional artistic beauty standards, and is best known for founding the "art brut" or "raw art" movement. Dubuffet characterized art brut as being "created from solitude and from pure and authentic creative impulses... where the worries of competition, acclaim and social promotion do not interfere".

Very Good Condition. Letter (likely secretarial) from Secretary of War John C. Calhoun to Robert Earp of Philadelphia. Calhoun writes denying Earp's request for Calhoun to re-visit a claim Earp has made. "...after full examination am of opinion, that, the decision of the Commissary General in the case is correct." Earp further petitioned Calhoun to turn the decision over to "impartial men", or "subject to a jury" with Calhoun refusing both suggestions. We find no record of what the dispute was--Robert Muir (1789-1848) was a hardware merchant, served as a Director of the Kensington Bank and served on a number of civic committees in Philadelphia. Captain Jack Crawford (1847-1917), known as "The Poet Scout", was born in Ireland and emigrated to the United States at the age of 14. He was wounded twice in the American Civil War, where while convalescing, Crawford learned to read and write. After the war he moved to Centralia, Pennsylvania to work the coal mines and later became the local postmaster. In 1875 Crawford went to the Black Hills to prospect but ended up working as a correspondent for the Omaha Daily Bee.
