Description:
Yeagertown, Pennsylvania, 1910. J.M. Yeager Milling Company Whole Wheat Alfarata Flour Sack, J.M. Yeager, Yeagertown, Pennsylvania Circa 1910. 25 x 12/5 inches. Off-white cotton with red and blue pictorial imprint and recto and blue pictorial imprint on verso. Light soiling and previous folds. No drawstring. Likely new old stock. Very Good Condition. A striking example of early 20th century typography with beautiful block cut image of a scene from a setting similar to Yosemite with a native American woman with bow and canoe on recto. Verso shows a less dramatic yet pleasing design of Alfarata Wheat. Flour sacks had to be durable with a tightly woven fabric for effective use, which made them popular, especially during the depression to be re-purposed as dresses, hand towels or tablecloths.

Yonkers, New York, 1915. [Jack London] Typed Letter (Retained Carbon) From Joseph Noel to Jack London Re: Controversy Over Sea Wolf Moving Picture and Play, Yonkers, New York, December 5, 1915. 2pps. 8.5 x 10.25 inches. Small chips and tears to edges, several pin holes and discoloration at bottom of page 2. In protective sleeves. Good Condition. Emotional and somewhat nasty typed letter from Jack London's former friend Joseph Noel to London regarding the timing of the release of Sea Wolf as a silent movie in 1913. Jack London and Joseph Noel were close friends for many years and Joseph had the acquired all dramatic rights Sea Wolf. As Noel writes in this letter, "Previous to February 20, 1912, I held all the dramatic rights of the Sea Wolf. On that date you, under the cloak of friendship, took with a word the moving picture rights back. The only condition I imposed was that the play version of the Sea Wolf should have the right of way for two years...." London would go on to release the silent…

Wilmington, Los Angeles, California, 1869. Very Good. [Jack London, Charmian London] Autograph Letter signed by Captain Willard Kittredge, Father of Charmian Kittredge London, Willard Kittredge, Wilmington, Los Angeles, California, 1869, 7.5 x 9.75 inches, 1 pp. Ink on delicate, translucent paper; bearing a "Bancroft" mark to top left corner, presumably name of paper mill, though I couldn't find any information on the company; one horizontal and three vertical fold lines; some edge wear, especially to left corners; overall in very good condition. This letter is addressed simply, "Dear Judge," and though Kittredge inquires after the judge's wellbeing, a name is never mentioned. In the letter, Kittredge also talks about his wife and various matters with which he and the judge appear to both be involved, though the letter is somewhat difficult to decipher given that the ink bled through the thin paper on both sides. The letter is signed, "I remain as ever your Friend, W. Kittredge." Following his…

N.P.: Jean Dubuffet, N.D.. Very Good. Jean Dubuffet Lithograph of "Totem Moaï" Personnage, Jean Dubuffet, N.P., N.D., 9 x 12 inches. Lithograph print on matboard; print very lightly toned to edges, could be hidden with frame; no creases or edge wear; very good condition. This print has a Dubuffet autograph to the bottom right corner; however, it appears to be printed, not an actual signature. Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) was a French painter and sculptor of the School of Paris. He embraced a "low art" aesthetic, favoring authenticity over traditional artistic beauty standards, and is best known for founding the "art brut" or "raw art" movement. Dubuffet characterized art brut as being "created from solitude and from pure and authentic creative impulses... where the worries of competition, acclaim and social promotion do not interfere".

John C. Calhoun Autograph Letter Signed as Secretary of War--May 3rd, 1820 Single-page letter on bifolium sheet, 8 x 10 inches. Previous folds. Light toning and slight separation at folds. Very Good Condition. Letter (likely secretarial) from Secretary of War John C. Calhoun to Robert Earp of Philadelphia. Calhoun writes denying Earp's request for Calhoun to re-visit a claim Earp has made. "...after full examination am of opinion, that, the decision of the Commissary General in the case is correct." Earp further petitioned Calhoun to turn the decision over to "impartial men", or "subject to a jury" with Calhoun refusing both suggestions. We find no record of what the dispute was--Robert Muir (1789-1848) was a hardware merchant, served as a Director of the Kensington Bank and served on a number of civic committees in Philadelphia. John C. Calhoun led a long and varied life in public service including: member of the House of Representatives, United States Secretary of War from 1817-1825, Secretary…
